View Full Version : Global Illumination?
Raenz 06-27-2003, 05:35 PM Hello all.
I have been using MAX for a few months now (Lightwave user for 4 years), and was intriqued with the soft renders of artist's models. It looks a lot like real world lighting, and you get away from that "plastic" look that most renders have.
Someone mentioned that it's achieved by "turning on" GLOBAL ILLUMINATION. Unfortunately, I am unfamiliar with this.
Could anyone point me to a spot in the manuals, or give me some info on this?
I would really appreciate it. BTW: I am using MAX 3.1 (Is it version specific?)
Thanks
EDIT: After some more investigation, I think that it is 5.1 specific feature within Light Tracer? Is this correct?

yeah version 5 introduced the skylight and advanced lighting
you could use a 3rd party renderer like brazil or vray too. not sure if they work with version 3 though

Thanks for the reply.
Howdy !
You can still use some global illumination in previous versions of Max, look up scriptspot (http://www.scriptspot.com) and search for SkyDome i think.
Basically you need to create some geomery (like a dome or sphere) and then create a light at each of the object's vertex, then tweak the lights using your Lights Lister tool.
You can do it manually or use the above mentioned script that will do it for you on created geometry.
To furthermore complement to effect, you can then create colored lights, according to your objects and materials, that will let you simulate the "color bleed" phenomenon that also happens in GI.
I would guess that Brazil, VRay and fRender work with the R3.x builds, and the HDRI plugin is also available for R3.x from splutterfish (http://www.splutterfish.com/sf).
hope that helps !

I don't know if some of these are 3.1 compatable, but you have a bunch of choices to simulate this effect. E-light, trinsica area light, HDRDomelight, Domalicious(love that name) and I think there are a couple of others as well. Max 5 is the only version featuring the light tracer, you are correct. Also try script spot there may be more. These are all pretty much lighting rigs that snap a light to vertices on an object, they are all very effective solutions, I know because I have a slow PC and these scripts(as well as light tracer and occasionally the brazil public version) help me achieve a similar effect. Here are some links, again check for version compatability.
