Hi!
Finally I have finished the first part of my first real Blender tutorial.
It'a about modeling a fly. The first part is covering a very short introduction to the interface, the use of Grease Pencil and some modeling techniques in Blender. The following parts, which I hope to be finished soon, will cover the use of dupligroups, some basic rigging, fur editing and some basic compositing / rendering.
You can find the tutorial here:
http://www.3dzentrale.com/tutorials/mod_001_fly/fly_tutorial.html
If you want to get an idea of the whole modeling process go ahead and watch the timelapse version here: http://www.vimeo.com/2879397

I watched the first few minutes of the tutorial and it looks like I am going to have to finisgh watching it later when i have some time. I have been really curious about the modeling workflow in Blender especially coming from a modeling background in Lightwave.

Excellent tutorial... I had a little trouble reading some of the prompts (too fast) but its easy to rewind of course. Some great tips in there regarding setup and modeling work flow, you are very generous to share your methods here and this helps greatly.

Its great that you made a tutorial but it would be better if you used voice and went slower for beginners, but I understand this can take a lot of time and effort.

Actually I prefer text over voice. It's way easier to pause the thing and carefully read (if needed), than having to rewind all the time to hear the whole sentence.

Looking forward to the next vids, especially the rigging and fur.

On a sidenote, where do you get these vector-like reference images from? Noticed one on your "Wasp" timelapse too.

I'm guessing you mean the grease pencil feature?

the links to the reference imagesmy guess is that Hecatomb means the images you see in the background that are traced with the grease pencil feature.
Just search for wasp reference and housefly reference in google images and they both show up on the first result page.

Here's the reference for the fly in svg format:

Really awesome stuff Sebastian.
Gonna have to show this off to some of my friends who are still blender skeptics, hehe.
Can't wait to see the next parts, especially looking forward to the shading, that's really where I feel like I'm hitting a wall recently.

great tuts, you must have studied biology to make such good, insect models , chapeau.

what i liked best was the way how you textured the fly.

I watched the firstpart of your tutorial last night and was stunned with how useful it was. You really took the time to go through the basics.
I'd seen the grease pencil before but assumed it was used to help animators, seeing you using it as a modeling aid was an 'eurika!' moment for me.

I'm migrating from Maya & Lightwave to Blender and your tutorial so far (and the wasp timelapse) has inspired me to push full steam ahead into Blender.

One small question though, when you are dragging verts around (i.e. as when showing us the automerge function) how are you actually moving the verts? I know you can use the 'G[rab]' key but you seem to be directly clicking on the verts and dragging. When I try this I get the hotbox menu (the alternative to pressing the spacebar).
So far I've been using the manipulator to move verst but something a bit more freeform would be great.

Keep it up, I can't wait to see the other parts.

just right click(hold down) & drag.

if you have the 'Drag Immediately' setting on, you wont need to click to confirm the move,
so its like the tweak mode in silo/wings.

@Bliz:
To drag vertices around, like the drag toolin Lightwave I believe, just right-click the vertice and immediately drag. So click-and-drag. If you wait before dragging, you will get the tool box.

Also, I just now discovered that you can skip the left-mouse button confirm click by enabling 'drag emidiately' under Edit Methods in the config Panel (don't know how else to call it :) ) Now the drag tool works just like the one in Lightwave (I was a former Lightwave user too ;))
