In partnership with 3D World magazine and The Pixel Farm, Side Effects Software is pleased to announce the 2009 Apprentice Challenge. This year the challenge is to use Houdini Apprentice (available for free) to add CG elements to one of two live action shots to create either the Most Realistic or the Most Entertaining entry.

The image sequences and Houdini scene files with tracked cameras are made available once you have registered. You must then add CG to your chosen shot and post the results to the 2009 Apprentice Challenge YouTube group by May 1, 2009. Popularity on YouTube will play a role in choosing a winner in each of the two categories who will win a copy of Houdini Master and PFTrack.

Check out the latest issue of 3D World for contest info or visit www.sidefx.com/contest (http://www.sidefx.com/contest) to get started right away!

I don't mean any disrespect but judging something based on it's popularity on Youtube sounds like a really bad idea. I'd love to be proven wrong. I know it's only half the judging but... I don't know... Have you seen the kind of anarchy that happens with the comments there? ...I don't think I want those people judging my work.

[edit]

I totally forgot to mention that I think it's a really great idea for a contest! Supplying the footage makes all the difference. It's a pitty all I have is a MacBook (first gen ones are not 64 bit) so I can't run Houdini.

There is a 32 bit version of Houdini you know...

This sounds great and a really nice way to also learn other features which I haven't touched on yet. Hope to find the time...

Unfortunately, the OS X version is 64bit only. Although, you could always install Windows via bootcamp and run Houdini that way.

For something like this a little anarchy never hurt anyone. The reason we made the popularity a factor is that often CG artists create art that appeals to other CG artists instead of to a wider audience. The Most Entertaining category will benefit from a bit of mass-market appeal which is the goal here.

I just tried to enter and at the bottom of the 3dworld site:

it says: "This competition is closed."

Any clues?

UPDATE: Their registration system is now up and running - or you can register at www.sidefx.com/register. Both sites provide the same information upon registration.

I've been trying to find where I can view low rez versions of the two option clips, any links?
Thanks

You can now find the two shots on YouTube. Check out the contest YouTube Group:

http://www.youtube.com/group/3dworldchallenge

"Building - Contest Footage"
"Alley - Contest Footage"

When you register you are given the image sequence, sound file and Houdini scene file for the shot you choose.

Note: The alley quicktime movie has been updated with a sound file that makes no reference to "hamsters." The sound file is more generic now so that you have more options for adding CG into the shot. As mentioned in the rules you can then add your own voiceover and sound effects to support your idea.
