when he clicks "Show objects with smooth shading"
its very very smooth. while when i do it. Its still rather boxy.
Any thoughts?

If you're referring to the bit towards the end, you might be getting mixed up with the "Smoothed Preview" mode, which is different from the smooth shading mode ("Tab" by default). Smooth shading keeps the existing geometry while applying smooth shading to the viewport, as opposed to "Smoothed Preview", which also uses smooth shading, but also applies a level one subdivivision to your mesh temporarily, which is why it looks a lot less boxy.
