View Full Version : Neurosis for Breakfast - Short Film WIP
lyzarts 01-24-2009, 07:16 PM I'm a graduate animation student at AAU, and after communicating with a fellow AAU graduate, Paul Yan of "Egg Hunt," I decided to create a production blog for my thesis short film.
I'll update this thread every week with the progress I make. I already have models and simple rigs for my characters that I created last semester. However, I'd like to optimize both the models and the rigs for animation. This semester I will be doing texture & lighting, as well as rigging and some layout.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that critiques are very welcome! :D

Thanks for looking!

Working on fixing the weight problems with the rigs. This will take a few weeks:

Been modeling the Owner and starting to set up his rig. Since you only see his legs and arms, he looks like an "interesting" character. :)

Tackled some lighting tests these past few weeks. I know little about lighting and texturing, so this will be a very slow process. :)

I like your style that you are creating but I had one question....is the table temporary?? It seems a little large compared to everything else and it doesn't seem to fit the style of everything else.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure if I will keep the table. Originally there wasn't going to be anything on that side, but I thought a table and chair would be a nice addition. Not sure how well it's working, though.

More lighting tests for this week:

I'm also getting introduced to the concept of gamma and how it affects the overall render brightness and contrast:

Progress on the rigs has taken a hiatus, given that I'm doing the 3D Layout/Animatic and the lighting and texturing. Hopefully I will get some help in finishing the rigs so blocking can start this summer.

Yet more lighting tests for this week. Unfortunately, I can't put up the work done for 3D layout or the animatic for creative copyright reasons.

Haven't updated in two weeks or so, but I have more to show.
Turns out I got a friend to do the lighting for me, as I wasn't getting anywhere fast on my own. Essentially we had to start from scratch. Here's what we have so far:

Also, I've made more progress on the Owner's rig:

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd80/lyzarts/legtest01.jpg
Did a very short walk test just to see how the rig moves. I only spent 2 hours on it, so I know there are many things wrong with it. :D : http://www.lyzarts.com/misc/leg_test01.mov

Another friend who agreed to do facial rigging for me has directed me towards fixing the geometry problems on my character meshes. They have come out 10x better now:

Sorry about the lack of updates. I moved to a new place and it doesn't have internet yet.
Here are a few of the beauty shots of my film:

Apologies again for not being consistent in updating the progress of this film.
Here's expression sheets of the characters. Will have test walk cycles up next time.

Finally, some animation!
The rigs are not 100% yet, but close enough for now. It's too bad this place doesn't let you embed videos...
