Hi, hello to all.

I am humbled by the fantastic work I see in these sketchbooks and meekly present to you a sketchbook thread of my own.

I currently work as a 3D generalist at a post production house. My main area of interest is in modeling and lighting.

I have been a frequent visitor to the CGTalk forums over the years and have recently found myself drawn to some of the 2D art being posted.

I got a Wacom for my birthday so I figured there was no better excuse to get stuck into digital painting.

To be honest my long term goal is not necessarily to be good at painting humans. My primary aim (at the moment) is to get better at using colour and light to convey a mood or atmosphere.

I have done a few life drawing classes and I have taken a light interest in drawing for as long as I can remember.

To kick off my sketchbook I'll post one of the first paintings I did with my new Intuos. It was done using a reference photo.

I read some of Stahlberg's posts and he insists that to get good at painting, people should start by trying to paint the simplest objects (cubes, spheres and cones). I grabbed the nearest cube-like thing and used it as reference.

And, just to prove how bad I am without reference:

So I then went and downloaded one of Loomins' books, it was great. I have a book about drawing people at home and the difference is clear. My old book showed plenty of examples but didn't delve much into construction and instead talked a lot about the different combinations of pen/pencil and paper.

Anyway, here are some quick sketches I did after doing some Loomin excercises:

DSo my faces aren't very good. I wanted to do some specific parts (eyes, ears, noses, mouths). I should have done some quick sketches of a lot of the various parts from different to get a better idea of shape, volume, etc. but I got carried away on my first sketch. This eye was painted using reference (http://www.ergoindemand.com/desk-exercises-ergonomic-breaks.htm).

I do love the way it's so easy to choose colours and to erase things with digital. It almost feels like cheating.

By the way, thanks for the welcome message yarabe.

Kevin, for some reason I can see only 2 of your images (there should be more images here that you posted, I assume ??) - what kind of hosting server do you use ??

anyway - welcome!

Hi, Alenah, thanks for the welcome.

All pictures are hosted on Picasa. That should work, shouldn't it? It's strange that you can only see two of them.

There appears to be an issue with using Picasa, it's late, I'll have to try and fix it tomorrow.
