hey!!
you know that in Max you can see the outline of the quads but you can also see the direction on the triangle edges (if i remember right the were just made from thinner lines)

well, is there a similar thing in maya?
i only seem to be able to display the quads ( unless i triangulate the whole thing )

the only workaround that i have come up with for this is to manually split the polygon when i think that the triangle edge is facing the wrong way.

i'm also having no luck with the flip triangle edge option.

any ideas?
cheers!!

What would the problem be if it were facing the wrong way?

Max can only handle true quads/nsided faces in edit polymode. So most of the time you only have geometry that is made up of triangles. Maya on the other hand can handle quads/nsided faces at all times. There is no way to show those edges because the faces in maya are actually true quads. You actually have to triangulate the surface if you want it as triangles.

there is a display mode that will display face triangulatn of the model, w/o triangulating it. check custom pol display, and poly display preferences.

Under display>Custom Polygon Display>Face check on triangles.

It will show the internal triangulation in the poly display.

If you need to display in all poly you can use window>Setting/preferences>Display>Polygons>Faces check on triangles.

hey!!
thanks for the replies guys.
never thought to look in the custom poly menu.
strange how sometimes the obvious just never occurs to me. sorry.

gmask...

the problem with the triangle facing the wrong way would be that on a low poly model, to get the shapes right, sometimes the triangles need to be facing the right way otherwise it can look,, well, wrong i guess.

i know that for game models i could just have all triangles but i think sometimes it just looks messy. ( probably my modelling tho)

thanks again.
cheers!!
