non-roll setup?

Well, I've looked at it some, but I still can't figure out what the big deal is for the arm. It seems like he's got one set of joints for the shirt and another for the arm maybe? The video doesn't have enough frames for me to tell what he's actually doing.

Is it that he can rotate the whole arm from the shoulder while it's in IK? To me that just says he has the twist or pole vector of the arm hooked up to the shoulder control in some way.

I found this old posts. Maybe there's something there that makes sense to you? never done it so i don't understand what he's preventing, but I can think of ways to make rigs to do the same thing.
