AFAIK, there´s no Maya-intern function or command.
but You can do it easily by command line.
Set all your attributs in your renderGlobals and save the scene.
Use the batch-render-flag "-l nameOfTheLayer"
Now just type "render -l myFirstLayer -l mySecondLayer -l myThirdLayer .... myScene.mb"
Important: you have to set all the Layers you want to render in the command line. I do it in the same order of the layers in Maya itself (Up --> Down), but i don´t think ít matters.

can you also do this.
rmb on your layer, select objects in layer. add them to a render layer, and just turn it on
everything you dont want put on a render layer and just dont have it render. i know your no newbie nicool, so i hope im not boring you. but im sure this would work . it would only take a second of your time also just ahve to make a few new layers, and turn on render layers. or ...whatever in the render globals. sorry maya isnt open im tired also .
