lordrych is doing the 3d version of a minotaur drawn by avatar over at threedy.com. well i asked avatar if i could work on it in 2d and he said sure, so i did.

i'm a newbie to this so sorry if it's not up to snuff with some of the stuff that's on here.

although i'm quite surprised i managed to make this :)

i'm not too pleased with the metal (doesn't look quite like metal) and the skin on the arm is a bit bland now but it's a WIP, that's why you work on things.

and before you ask -- NO i didn't use a wacom tablet, just a mouse. qutie difficult and time-comsuming, especially when the only tool you use is a 2px circular dodge and burn..!

I'll reply to you...

ok pic overall, I realise its a wip
The arm looks a bit small, unless the shoulders are above the head...alot

the colours are also quite saturated.

If you put some shadows around the hair line, made the hair less sharp, and put some heavier shadows on the horns, that may make the whole picture stand out a bit more

Im not looking at this as an artist, just as a normal person so my ideas may be flawed.

I think if you post the image rather than links to other threads, you'd might get more responses. You wouldn't go to a portfolio review and have sticky notes redirecting the employer to another page would you?

Not that this is as serious as a portfolio review, but it makes it more convenient for the users viewing your thread.

As for the image ... I'd say the colors are too saturated which make it seem very cartoonish. The metal appears pewter, which would be very poor protection from weapons of medieval nature.

Find some reference images of armor and study how the reflections react on the surfaces. Offhand, I'd say that the highlights and shadows need to have sharper edges to give it a more solid look.

Pick a light source that will highlight somewhere else on the metal other than dead on middle. You don't have much highlight on there yet, but the way your shading it you're going to have to for it to make sense.

Lastly, don't ever paint on a white background.

believe me -- when it takes as long as it does with such a tiny brush you don't feel like making the shadows all that dark ;) i suppose i could adjust the HSL some.

i was trying to get the highlights vs. the shadows to be sharp on the metal but it was a bit difficult.. seemed kinda clunky with even a 2px brush. maybe i'll have to go down to 1px..!

any reason i shouldn't paint on a white BG? :)

The "cannot remotely link, sorry" message comes from the server you're hosting your images on. Find a server that allows remote image linking and you can get around this.

It sounds like you're painting at a very low resolution (the 1 and 2 pix brushes). What you should do is paint on a larger resolution. Get the linework up to 150 dpi (minimum) and then you can use larger brushes. 300 dpi is preferred if you want to print your images for your portfolio (or, as I've recently found out, submit to the Expose' book). You can always reduce the image size when you're done to 72 dpi for the web.

I say "don't paint on white" because it tends to wash out your colors. I always pick a nice complimentary neutral color to work with. You'll find your colors look much better and your characters aren't competing with the harsh white background.
