View Full Version : Unwrap UVW
kidlizard 01-19-2009, 07:37 PM Hello, can anybody direct to a good Unwrap UVW Tutorial or book. The help files that are along with the software are kinda complicated for me.
thanx

I can help walk you through it if you like. :) Where do you get stuck?

Yes, what is your problem exactly ?
When you begin to use Unwrap UVW, you would have to think coordinates and 3D in a 2D world, which is very complex. But as soon as you practice (with some tutorials) a little bit, things are changing and the difficulty vanish. It's just a mind hurdle...

I understand the general unwrap method. I was wondering about getting more info on unwrapping more complicated geometry using say pelt mapping?

With pelt mapping, its just like that, a pelt. So:
-you go into Unwrap UV mode
-seperate the model where you want the seams to be (its not a nice image but imagine skinning an animal for a pelt, most people would want the seam to be on the belly and inside the legs, so make your cuts there, imagine an animal hide). The texture can't be in a closed loop, it needs an edge to pull out to.
-select in face mode (hotkey 3) the part you want to pelt (CTRL-B will sepearate that bit for you)
-while you still have the Edit window open go back over to the Command Panel and scrolll waay down to Pelt
-click Start Pelt and then Start Relax and it will try and strecth out the points on the UV (where the vertices are on the model) and just watch it do funky things until you think it looks good for painting a texture on.
Then rinse and repeat until you have all the pieces you want. The less pieces the better because seam matching can often be a pain in the butt if you are using a lot of detail.
Best advice I think is to take some models you have already made andmake a backup save and just play around with it.
Good luck. :)

I would like to see a tutorial on UVW mapping a tank or armored vehicle. The only one I found was for a fighter plane and it was using an older version and a plugin call Textporter.
