View Full Version : model cloth or use reactor?
plaguelord 06-26-2003, 02:57 PM Hi, I have a little question, what is the best solution for make a cloak or dress. I need to model a large plane with the basic shape and apply reactor cloth or I must model all the cloth in the character?
(my modeling skills are stardard, not expert o awesome stuff)
thanks

First off i'd say it depends, depends on what you want to achieve, depends if your character and cloth will be moving or not, depends on you...
Say you character won't be moving much and don't need any physics going on with the cloth then you might want to model it, after all it's not harder to create / model folds than it is to add wrinkles or details on a face.
Anyways cloth physics won't do all the work for you, i mean that anyway you'll have to model the cloth, using reactor or any other plug/script for that will add "natural" looking folds and stuff, but it won't shape the cloth itself; now what'd be interesting is that you'll be able to animate the cloth on the character using any such solution.
As a side note, Reactor might not be the best solution for big pieces of clothing, and you might want to try Simcloth or some other solution.

thanks a lot, my character is for a still shot. So it seems to be the best choice to model the cloth, you know some good tutorial to make folds and stuff like that?
Not specifically, have a look in here (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21263) and maybe you'll find something (also look up character-aimed tutorials, they often feature cloth modeling bits as well); also look around for other people's work to use as an inspiration, oftentimes people post their wireframes up in the WIPs and Finished Works forums...
