My Max crashes every once and a while, when I try to bring up Material Editor Window.

Anyone knows a fix?

Howdy !

I once had a problem with the Material Editor (crashed Max when i was brought up), but it was quite specific, i was using Brazil PubTest and had set the MEdit renderer to be Brazil, which did not work at all : )
But it was rather specific, so i would guess it won't help.

Have you installed the latest ServicePack and so on (you say Max 5.2 - did i miss something..) ? Are you using specific shaders / texture maps, could it be a memory handling issue and you'd be using lots of huge maps or something ?

I have updated Max to 5.2 and I am using Brazil 1.0.

It happens with only default materials in it as well... It happens like every 3rd time I open/load a scene.

It was called 3DS Max 5.2 Service Pack 1 from where I DLed it, but I searched the net and it's called 5.1. Go figure :)

There was a bug in early Brazil r/s releases where the material editor would sometimes crash due to the presence of a Brazil Advanved material in a matlib.

This was fixed in a subsequent release, and is not a problem in the latest version available (1.0.14).

I would highly recommend updating from 1.0 to 1.0.14.

Had you restarted before you updated to 5.1? If there is any Cdilla stuff running, 5.1 fails to update some of the files, causing very similar problems to what you've described.

Try re-installing Max, then restarting and applying the update directly after restarting.

If you delete the 3dsmax.mat in matlibs folder - hopefully that should fix it

[back it up first if you want]

You said about the service pack "...from where I DLed it...".

Just a thought but did you download it from discreet or elsewhere? If the latter, first question would be "why?" and next would be how do you know it wasn't corrupt or maybe contained a virus or something? That may be the reason for the crash.

Try a fresh install as Scrap suggests. (And get any service packs and such from discreet's site only!!!)

Looks like Simon's tip about deleting the 3dsmax.mat worked. Thanks S!
