View Full Version : Question about advanced render and passes

Does it crash every five minutes like Mental Ray does.

I'm ready to switch software because I can't tolerate the inexplicable constant crashing in certain scenes with Mental. I've been babysitting a render for an entire weekend, and have needed to reload it about 50 times.

Also, is there a built in pass system like XSI? I'm not talking about spec, diffuse, relection, etc. I mean a real pass system in which you can basically make subscenes inside the main scene which contain custom alphas, mattes with knockouts, single objects with different surfaces, etc.

Anyone got the scoop on this?

No on both questions.
With R11 a new way of organising different rendersettings has been introduced. I think this may cover some of your needs regarding passes, but i don't think it's fully what you ar elooking for.

Every 5 minutes, ouch. Itll crash every 5 weeks if youre really unlucky, but probably closer to every 5 months.

Theres no pass system as youre used to in xsi, but the passes system it does have (spec, shadow, ref etc...) does allow you to make custom alphas per object selection, so you can make the masks you should need. It doesnt allow different shaders and textures per pass though.

preaps,
with this (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=47&t=715018&page=1&pp=15)and CINEMA4D you can make all custom pass you need.
