Hi there, I just finished work on a new rig for our upcoming feature and decided to test the funtionality of the piece using our standard walk test. I think the attention to detail that we have acheived is pretty amazing so i thought i had better not keep this news of a breakthrough like this to myself. The rig uses advanced algorithms and AI to generate full body animation just from the movement of the feet. I think this works to great effect, what do you think:

p.s. if you like what you see, the rig will be available for purchase at an amazing price of $299. orders via email.

it looks kinda poopy..
your advanced "algorithms" arent workin out so good.

It's a good idea, but man, those advanced algorithms of yours need a little work. The first thing that's odd is the arms...they're all over the place. Part of the problem may be your lack of elbows, but they mainly just swing around in broad, sweeping circles. Try a more subtle figure-eight style swing. Next is the cane, as mentioned before, it passes right through the leg, it never touches the ground (therefore it's useless) and it also seems to be swinging backwards. You've got it swinging anterior to posterior which just looks odd. You need a bit more translation up and down also, right now it seems like he hardly bobs up and down at all. It makes it look almost as if he's hanging from a string thats tied to his head. This is also a direct contributer to another problem...the legs. When your character steps forward, his knee pops into an over-extended position. The feet also need work, as they seem to slide a bit. This is probably due to the toe not coming down fast enough on the step forward. The feet also are only moving in two axis, which is odd. Try making them swing in a little towards center as they step forward. The last thing I'll mention is the torso area. The hips and shoulders should move independently of each other. Right now, they both rotate exactly the same. They should be counter rotating against each other to keep balanced. Try toning down the hip rotation a bit, then have the shoulders rotate in the opposite direction of the hips....try walking like your character does: Right foot forward, right shoulder forward...left foot forward, left shoulder forward.....feels odd doesn't it? I suggest that if you're going to sell this "rig" (even for the low low price of $299) you might want to go through and tweak some of those advanced algorithms.

You wanted comments, you got 'em
-Mike

PS: By "tweak" I mean completely re-write.

Hey,

I like your idea, obviously anything that makes life easier is worthwhile looking at, but thats really not working. It looks terrible. I think most animators could achieve that animation in a matter of minutes. I really think the idea is cool, but it need's a lot of work

Keep working at it though!

Horrible.

i cant critique anything on it because absolutly every single peice of it needs works, plus i beleive all the main critiques have been taken care of above,

but most animators, even students could p;ull that walk off in a matter of minutes without the use of your overpriced alogarythms.

If you can improve upon it, it sounds like a great idea.... in theory, but until its vastly improved i doubt you'll be receiving any orders for it.

but by all means keep trying
