I never really came to texturing a model, I always kept modeling. Now the WIP was a nice reason for me to give it a shot. I modeled the Peregrine Falcon (Falco Peregrinus), the fastest bird on the planet makes topspeed at 350 km/h. I modeled it to be used as a pet for my Medieval Sorceress... Please comment all you want, I still have a lot to learn.

Here's the first developement

Thank you for at least taking a look.

I've had some problems with the images, but here they are on another server

The texture is too blurry for me to go on with it, I'm going to remake the texture when I am finished with the body...

Hope things work out better this time

THANK you for taking a look.

Looking pretty cool so far, Derby :)

The reason why your image map is so blurred is because the image itself is far too small. Nice model though
Looking forward to updates :)

I have now completed the modeling. The model doesn't have to be perfect, because I am going to add more detail using paintfx. I am now trying to find a good uv setup, any help would be welcome though. Thanx a lot for you post Leigh, coming from you I really feel honoured. Oh, and I've read your workshop, thanx for that too...

Here's a render of the model I need to texture, I was thinking of doing a side projection, so I can put all the uv's of one side on one plane...

On another server:

It seems like I'm having some bad luck with my servers these days, I hope that will be resolved soon.

Maya rocks for the 3DpaintFX. You really can do so much with it. I look forward to seeing how you go with your model. Great stuff so far.

Ok, I've been working on the texture all day, and I must say, one hell of a big GRATS to all the texturers in the world...darn, see for yourself...

My problem is I can't find good pictures of the feathers...or perhaps I just suck at this...well anyway, here's some renders

http://home.pi.be/~wc460004/SF05.jpg

I still need to do the edge on the wing and tail, but that'll be something I'll do next.

Thanx for posting. I will be changing the head more to the first coloring, which was, in my opinion, a LOT better

Thanx Bajaman for posting, your visit means a true honour for me. I thank you from the deepest of my heart.

Here's a little update... The map now has more black, and that makes my day.The nasty edges will be solved tomorrow, so are the seams.

that's it for today...22.22 CET

All for one, one for all.

You're an example to me.

Respects,

I solved most of the major problems, but there's plenty left to solve...Here's a little update. Again, major server problems, I hope 2 links will do.

http://home.pi.be/~wc460004/SF08.jpg

The tail is now a little better, the tail feathers will most likely become geometry because they are able to open and close, which makes it too complicated to do in pfx.

http://home.pi.be/~wc460004/SF09.jpg

Here's the rescaled texture, I made it on 2048x2048 this time...to be sure it's large enough.

Now I would try to add more maps to it...it isn't ideal, but I just wanted to get grip on the texturing.

Here's how I would do it:

Create a bunch of scaled planes and position them in the shape of the birds' tail.
Create a texture of a feather and be sure to make an alpha channel too. (outline of the feather+blurred edges)
Then just map the color texture to the planes and use the alpha as visibility map.
This is a conventional gaming technique and when used with high resolution maps, you can achieve quite an impressive result.

Cons: if you look at the feathers from the side, they'll be infinitely thin. This can be solved by creating multiple layers and twisting the planes a bit...

I think if you would create a feather from a plane you would GREATLY increase the number of vertices. Unless you have a Quadro 4 I wouldn't recommend this... ;)

Keep us posted!
Good job so far.

I am kinda following the train of though here, except.... a couple of idea changes.... do a couple of feathers, no the whole tail, and us an alpha/opacity map for the feathering, then structure the feathers as you desire... you can make them any way you wish, but I suggest creating a true quill for the center... like a loft or modified cone... then radiate the sides of the feather out from that.... if you also create a couple of different feathers as far as the skin is concerned, you can achieve a pretty realistic sense in it. then you can use FFD's or bend modifiers or such to get it the shape.... in the end... it should look pretty cool... get it... in the end...LOL:D

Thanx for the tips, I'll see what fits me best, currently I'm looking for good feathers...
