In much the same light as I've seen others do I'm starting up a sketchbook thread I'm hoping to keep update with works from my classes while the semester progresses. I'm going to start the thread off with some of the first things I did over the summer as a starting reference point.

I hope to see whether or not I improve any while over the course of the semester. Sadly my classes are more about expression and meaning rather than the technical skills I know I need practice on, so the onus is on me to practice outside of class more often!

I'm already quite aware of the flaws in these pieces, but feel free to crit them anyway. I'm actually a little embarrassed to share them, I'm sure I can do better.

*EDIT*
In the interest of science, I've removed my old pieces and am focusing on new stuff from this semester.

New painting, March 03 2009
Spent about 12 hours working on this painting for class. It's my first painting, to be honest, I've never really dealt with paint before.

Used cheap latex black and white. Rules for the assignment were, if using a grayscale meter from 1 (white) to 10 (black) the center is 1 or 10, the corners are 6 to 9 and the remaining squares are 2 to 5.

I had to use my cell phone to photograph it, didn't have a camera on me. I'll take a better picture and update later.

Painting is a 3' x 3' portrait of former Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins.

Dirty painting on scrap wood for a... I'm drawing a blank on the term and it's frustrating me trying to remember.

Okay, so I didn't keep posting as much as I wanted at all last semester, but I have a couple new things to share from my current semester of painting.

This was a colour theory assignment where we were to select an advertisement and use the primary colour of the ad accompanied by its complimentary colour and a third of our choice to create a monochrome painting divided into three monochromatic bars.

I used some concept art I'd found online from Doom 3 for the below image, however my camera is pretty terrible so the actual painting looks somewhere halfway between the two images.
http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/1925/img1914j.th.jpg (http://img25.imageshack.us/i/img1914j.jpg/) http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/3289/img1916v.th.jpg (http://img194.imageshack.us/i/img1916v.jpg/)

This is the paintover I did earlier today for my next assignment. We're to take an impressionist painter and emulate their style by either reproducing a painting they did or using their technique on a painting of our own. I decided on Paul Cezanne's Harlequin but I've painted over his Harlequin with Harley Quinn. Hopefully my resulting Harley will be closer to Paul's original style.

I've completed the first pass of Harley, though I'll have to go back and rework some of the colours to meet the requirements of the assignment. It didn't turn out too badly. I wish I had a better area to photograph it from though.

There are a number of areas in the dark spots I have to rework. I've got highlights in too many odd areas.

I've retouched the painting based on suggestions from my instructor and eliminated a number of nonsensical highlights. The quality of the image is poor, I think it might be time to invest in a new digital camera...

The Harley final. Corrected a couple of oddities in her leg mostly. I'm askin for Camera money this Christmas.

Initial sketch for an inked wall scroll I'm designing for a class project. If it turns out well I'll be mailing it off as a wedding gift to the two people who will be the subject of the scrolls (two scrolls total, one person on each. 1.5' x 3')

Working with a Bruce Lee, Game of Death suit here. I'm going for a fairly neutral pose, nothing overly dramatic.

*Edit* Posted the most recent sketch with a quick colour paintover for some ideas of how it'll look when I put it on physical paper. The finished version will be a 1.5' x 3' watercolour and ink.

First planning sketch of the second scroll
If I gave him a razor straight bowl-cut bangs he'd have that whole James Earl Jones, Conan haircut going on there (which I now call the "Secret of Steel" cut).

I hasn't updated in a bajillion years! By which I mean since February. Here are some sketches that I've scanned in for a set of paintings I'm working on. Well, by some sketches I mean some panels in a single sketch.

I started working on a redraw of the upper left panel to clean up and improve a lot of the details but using my scanner is a right pain since Canon refuses to make 64 bit drivers for it.

I have a different version of the lower left panel I'll probably run with too.

Two painting series I knocked out over the last month:
http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/1981/img1981x.jpg (http://img214.imageshack.us/i/img1981x.jpg/)

Uploaded with ImageShack.us (http://imageshack.us)

based on the above sketches and also:
http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/4443/img1983wz.jpg (http://img838.imageshack.us/i/img1983wz.jpg/)

Uploaded with ImageShack.us (http://imageshack.us)

All panels are 2' x 2' with exception of the long one with the robot which is 2'x4'1"
Again I blame my camera for the fuzzy quality of the pictures. I think I'll try to get another photo of each before I have to take them down and see if I can get better quality.

Been doing a lot of work in a praxinoscope lately which means tiny little strips of paper and no ability to trace previous frames. This turned out not too bad all things considered.

I did some work to the old series of moustache paintings again. They have higher contrast (the photos still mute them out a lot) and put a coat of Enviotex (clear resin) to add some gloss and protect the surface.

And also other paintings! From beginning to end the paintings (images are thumbnail links to large versions on imageshack) are:
1. Fair Use
2. Icon 1
3. Icon 2
4. - 7. Ode to Moustaches
8. Terms of Service

I had hoped to produce some paintings that were bigger in scale and better quality but I ran into budget issues. Sigh, life of a student.

Christmas Gift(s) ahoy!

I didn't give myself a lot of time for this, but I decided to stretch my thin budget by painting some quick, small canvases as gifts.

First one complete, Raspberyl of Disgaea 3 based on this original image
http://images.wikia.com/disgaea/en/images/0/01/Raspberyl.jpg

http://images.kyleromano.com/Raspberyl1.jpg
http://images.kyleromano.com/Raspberyl2.jpg
http://images.kyleromano.com/Raspberyl3.jpg

It's a 12" x 16" canvas. Photos taken with my phone camera so they're not great quality... again.
