View Full Version : texture maps
wedge 05-03-2002, 12:15 AM how can I create a flat wire mesh of my model so I can texture it? i.e. converting the surface of a cylinder into a flat plane.
thanks

i don't really know what you're trying to do !? if you transfer a mesh into a plane (almost very hard work and probably not possible) it will be much harder to texture because you don't know where the eyes where as an example.
what you probably mean is how to get a planar texture map ??
this is what you always have (at least if it's nurbs). you can think of nurbs as it's always a simple plane (quadratic or rectangular). and this will be shared to the uv coordinates of the textures. so you always have a planar map.
the hard thing is to find out which pixel on the texture map belongs to what UV Coordinate on the surface.
actually there are a few ways to do this. you could use this grid like texture (you can get this on the net) which has a numbered grid, so you can see what pixel is which coordinate.
what i tend to use is to paint the edges and important parts with the 3D Paint Tool directly onto the surface in maya. then i have a good gideline to work with.

just found the link back to some of these marker textures

I think he wants to know how to make good UV maps.
I think this tutorial should pretty much answer your questions wgeddes

Nice link -wt-
Had to figure that out on my own a ways back. Wish I had a tutorial like this to reference, but on the good side I got to see one ugly mug!
That was near gross......lol
Thanks for link Im adding it to a list we keep.
