I've been having a lot of problems with Maya crashing. I'm pretty sure it's related to my graphics card and memory, but I'm having a hard time tracking down the problem and correcting it.
Crashes can be caused by opening Hypershade, redering in renderview, .... sometimes just changing a display from wireframe to shaded mode causes a crash. When a crash occurs, sometimes I get an error message, and sometimes Maya just shuts down without warning and I'm kicked back into Windows.
I have gotten error messages stating "Runtime Error," Failed to allocate space for image," "The memory could not be read," Most of these errors seem to be telling me that I have problems with memory,.... but I have 1 gig of RAM.
I can get these crashes using Mental ray, or Maya Software renderer. I've had no problems rendering with a batch render.
I'm currently using Maya Complete 5.0 on a 2 ghz Pentium 4 with 1 gig of RAM running under Windows XP. I have an NVIDIA 64 MB Quadro 4 NVS graphics card with the most current drivers I could find.
I have optimized my scenes, but that hasn't helped much.
When it is running, it still seems slow. When I change a view from wireframe to hardware textured the first time,... it takes forever to change,.... bringing up hypershade to edit a texture takes forever as well the first time. After it's done it once, it's fine.
I have had no problems modeling in Maya. Most of my problems seem to be image related. I know that Maya likes square maps best (512x512 etc.) but is there a limit to how large a map can be? (2000x2000, 8000x8000 ?)
I have some large maps, but not that large!
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
