View Full Version : Figurative Thread of Bhaskar - 2D/3D
bhaskar 01-15-2009, 04:46 PM Hi all,
I ve been continuously and constantly admiring this art thread and its been very inspiring and intimidating too to be a part of this thread, specially after seeing some of the greatest random sketches and 3d works from far more great character artists. I admire them all.
I was also thinking to be a part of this community since i was sketching from a very long time, but majorly many elements of schedule like time, work, laziness, timidness and my scanner problem was making me wait for today. And gladly today has come. :wavey:
So here i begin to entertain you all with my exercises :
Some of my past works to begin with :

Ofcourse, My motto will be to be better than what i m doing nowadays and to keep enjoying the journey of this spirit, with you all people. Will posting more. Hope you ll all like it.

Nowadays I m working on my form part on the paper and how to give a robust 3d or to say to give the best shape with the lines. I m refering a book from Bridgeman for all my studies.

Thanks Batte, Even i m also curious that what this process leads to. Surely I ve started to learn this block form on the human body to get more edge on the form and shape which was lacking in my past sketches.
Thanks Vinay, I m glad you liked it. Keep checking out this thread! :)

Hey Bhaskar,
Good thinking process. Simple strong forms to build the figure is hitting that nail right on it's head for construction. This combined with gesture will create some powerful drawings. Keep doing what you're doing.

Hi Phrenzy, Thanks for the compliment. Yes, You are very true abt the folds and joints part and I need to make a thorough learning onto those parts. But 1stly blocking out the geometry. :P
Lol Thanks Vinay. I m still feeling funny to see your remark here. You ve almost like signed a testimony on my sketchbook. :D
Hi AztecFireFlower, thanks a lot for the thumbs up for my process. I know that i wasnt wrong at all or wasting my time doing this and every single nod from you class apart artists will add some fuel to my gas tank.

Hi..Bhaskar ..:)
GREAT start to your thread..
A FANTASTIC book that might be very useful to you at the point your at now in your exploration of creating the illussion of form and volume ect., is DYNAMIC FIGURE DRAWING by Burne Hogarth..Not expensive, and you can get it on the internet...Definitly worth the investment, as are all of his books..:)
Looking forward to seeing lots more of your works

Hi Karthik! Thanks to you and glad u liked my studies!
Hi Glenn! Thanks very much! I ve that book as PDF and I ve gone through too. But that was very long time back. I still do have that with me but I m glued to 2 books right now which are Life drawing from Bridgeman( which has more artisitic flow than the written and realisitic diagrams which can influence my drawing style) and Atlas of Human Anatomy by Rogers Peck (very opposite of Bridgeman with the real diagrams with very detailed names and drawings).
The reason I m not opting others right now cause i ve got the apprehensions that studying with more than 2 books can cause me a confusion with the writing style and drawings too. After finishing them I ll try to grab another artists learnings.
Do tell me if i m wrong in this case.
And here now today was birthday, so i didnt sketch but found myself spending some quality time between family and friends. I wish i had some more time to scribble onto paper or Zbrush, but neverthless that time will also come later on.
So uploading some previous sketches. Very refreshing to my eyes :)

Hi ..Bhaskar..Nice update
About the Hogarth book/books...I just mentioned it/them so that you would be aware of it/them, in case you weren't already aware of it/them..:)
There are alot of different opinions and views as to how to learn...I think that it in the end, it is a personal choise, and should remain that way..:)
Imatation of and influence by a master draftsmans style can at times be a deadly trap that captures your own, if your not aware of it, that's for sure...Sounds like you are fully aware of that trap, which is GREAT..:)
The way that I first went about learning and studying anatomy was to take Burne Hogarths class on figure drawing..just because it was available.. and was in L.A. faily close to where I was living at the time.
At the same time that I took his class, I took a Great anatomical drawing class that dealt with bone and muscle funtion and attachment.
The combination of those two classes worked out perfect for my needs and lack of understanding of the human form at that time.
As time goes by, I find myself totally admiring the works of the old Italian master draftsmen, and can see all of the things that i've learned along the way about the human form put into action and practice by them..:)
Anyway, didn't mean to ramble on here..:D Just wanted to answer your question as to your thoughts about learning from master draftsmen.
Hope it helped some..:)
Looking forward to seeing lots more of these studies of yours..
Oh, by the way...HAPPY BIRTHDAY..:applause: :bounce:

Hi Glenn! Thanks for everything!
For clearing about the part what to study and how to study. I had already purchased some books recommended by a master artist of anatomy and zbrush, scott eaten on his website. No doubt, they were the de facto books for studies and sketches.
Thanks also for sharing your experince. I m also a BFA grad but in the applied art or commercial art you can say. That section is more about in printing and advertising than the real human studies and Painting. Though illustrations are covered but not in a full manner. So most of that part i studied in college, i assume isnt my cup of tea so left that long ago and came into gaming and character development. And to be in that i need to be well versed in anatomy to technicalities of gaming engines. Though i prefer my art side much thoroughly and cant be called as a geek. :p( sorry programmers) So as from this, i m learning and grasping whats keep on coming but by my choice. :)
Thanks also for wishing me my birthday. :P
And also Thanks for sharing your genuine views and guidance.
Here are todays sketches, though not many but i find the second one bit interesting :

hi Bhaskar!
great to see you have your own sketchbook thread here!
though there is few issues that might perhaps need to be improved a bit,
all in all I very much like your sketching style & approach!
way to go!
by the "issues" I mean e.g. the folding in the ink/pen/lineart (post #1) that does not look very convincing, since the black areas do not "fit" the lighting/lit folding "logic" very well, - or - if you do not mind - your last head construction studies seem to look a little bit "squeezed" and kind of "flat" in face, lacking the natural "transition" between the front and the back parts of the head (not sure about my English here, hope this makes sense .. ) --
but - this kind of head construction is not easy to draw at all, I know very well :)
perhaps trying to construct some little bit more simple/simplified faces first could help a bit ..
definitelly looking forward to seeing more from you!

hi Cindy and Alenah!
Thanks for your appreciations.
Alenah - indeed I feel or definately whatever i ve posted in my sketchbook arent so perfect or near to perfect at all. Thanks very much for the constructive review you ve made on my drawings. I still find myself confused while making folds or drapery from my imagination. Sometimes i feel very lazy to collect all the references i need to have.
On the head parts, yes i do feel its very hard to get the real form or shape of the head and i vnt reached there yet. If my approach is correct then what could be the simpler way of learning this part?
Waiting for your reply!
And here is some Zbrush studies i did :

hi bhaskar, nice thread, I am a learner too, but just thought of mentioning something that I first noticed when I saw you sketches. I feel that you have gotten into learning muscle details before mastering the form of the body. So, you are able to think only in terms of muscles rather than a 3d perspective. I had the same problem, but I am trying to break away from it by studying the vilppu drawing manuals which can be found here
http://www.vilppustore.com/Figrdvd.htm
He first explains how to form a human body with box and spherical shapes and then he applies anatomy to the box and spherical forms. I haven't gone through your entire thread, just posted a comment on what I spotted at first sight. I hope this is useful. Looking to see more from you.

Hi Nr43! Thanks for appreciating my efforts. Hopefully nothing goes wasted if u work hard even in the wrong way. I cant draw from life cause i need to ve model or a sketchbook when i ve a real life ppl around. ;) We friends use to go for outdoors but now things ve changed a lot. Office and their works kill u mostly.
Hi Vikram, thanks for dropping by here. I wish u wld ve seen all the pages of mine cause in the first i ve announced that i m trying to concentrate on the 3d volumes and shapes on paper most of now. As for muscles, this i ve inhereted from my past learnings through sketches and works. Yes little hasty to learn them but i guess nothing wrong if u ve learned bfore u know sketching. Thanks for the recommendation. I ll go through them.... but right now its Stephen Roger Peck and George Bridgeman.
And finally Richa has come over here. Thanks u liked my sketch and again thanks for recommendations. Keep on visiting here.

Great sketches! I love the way you define muscle. Great job on the flabby skin on that creature!
I see the squeezed look Alena mentioned on the 3/4 view portraits, most noticeable on the tip of the noses. But I don't see it as much on this page, so you are already improving! I thought about it, and the best way I can describe, since you are a 3d and concept artist, is early 3d games. I am thinking Nintendo 64 VS Playstation. Playstation could generate more polygons, but each polygon on the N64 could carry more information to make up for it, iirc. So they could cover up a large polygon with a painted surface, and if you looked straight at it, it would look as if there was depth within that polygon. But as soon as you walk around and look at it from an angle, you could tell it was just a flat surface with stuff drawn on it. Of course I am exaggerating a bit to get the point across, but I get a similar feeling from the portraits you based on the "tissue box" model. It seems as if facial features were drawn on that box, instead of beign sculpted on it to create depth.
Hope what I am saying makes sense. Looking forward to seeing more!

Thanks to all.
Its been very long since I ve uploaded anything, but that never meant that I wasnt working. Infact, I was working on other stuff which was non organic, so it can be a barren piece of artwork.
What i was working on were the few doodles (compared to all yours artworks here)
Here it goes....
A Painter work in test.... image reference was taken from the NGC photo.... which was having this beautiful colour rhythm. So I just tried emulating that.

And here is the fairy I ve been working on, in my free time. This Fairy I m trying to pitch for our small and tidy game. Hopefully, she works.

Posting up a result of the free time I got in the office. It was awesome to get this work at home for completion. Still a little tweaks remaining.

Hi There bhaskar! cool demon guy you have goin' here. I thought I might make a few suggestions (and I hope you don't mind I made a little paint over):
Some things to think about are when you are making your images, try and think of a main focal point to draw attention to. If you detail out everything the viewer wont know where too look and there will be no rest for the eyes. The key here is to think contrast. In the case of the demon guy you have here, I thought you had a nice opportunity to use its eyes as a focal point. In the paint over I basically darkened the image and subdued all the other highlights that you had going on along the form. I made the eyes the brightest thing in the picture and I used it as a light source to describe the form around it. Also notice taht I darkened the area around the eyes to play up their intensity. A good artist to look at for dramatic lighting like this is Rembrandt. Look at his paintings and notice how dark everything is except for where he wants you to look (the face if it is a portrait) yet he still maintains a level of detail through suggestion of form rather than rendering of form.
The second thing is that it would be cool it hit a sharp rim light somewhere, in this case it is coming from the monster's left (our right). This is kind of a cheap trick, but again, it is contrast that the eye likes so this is an easy way to incorporate an extra dose of vitamin C without too much trouble. The other thing about this is that you should consider not only where the light is coming from but also the actual color of the light. And in terms of what color the light should be, again we are dealing with the idea of contrast. If you main light source is a warm or reddish light, the secondary light source would play nicely against it if it were a cooler or in this case green light source. I also carried that greenish light over the whole background to contrast the warmer colors you are getting on the demon itself. If you look at a lot of illustrators, or even movies, they usually consist mainly of just two colors. Two opposite colors like orange and blue or red and green. As an example, Michael Bay's films only have blue and orange in them. So you can get a lot of mileage just thinking in complimentary colors.
anyway, I hope this helps!

This helped me a lot. Thanks a ton, DangerousLama.
I ve no words how you have helped me to refine this concept as well as telling me the techniques. And what more i can say, you even had drawn me to get the picture right.
I really appreciate it and the efforts you are making me to get more out of potential.
I ll work on it and ll show u better version from my side.
I talked to my art director abt this work and your comments and he also clarified many of your points in much easier ways or by showing his making of his concepts.
Thanks again to both, DLama and Vinay.
In the meantime, I was working on this sketch. This will be my guitar for the Satan Demon I had created.

Hi all,
Updating the mesh for the Guitar i am visualizing. This thing will work as the working prop for the satan demon. I was confused with the thickness of this guitar as i was treating this as the weapon like a mace or heavy crushing object. So putting both versions for consideration.

Here are some more works with this mesh.
I experimented with some transpose, matcaps and rendering techniques in Zbrush! Was contented with the result but not as much as Vray in rendering of course. Sampling is here very low too. I ll try the renders in Vray also sometimes later.
This piece of work is dedicated to the propellant in ourselves which forces us to do something away from linearisation.
