Hey,

RealTimeUK was given the task of creating a powerful cinematic for the game 'Stormbirds'. Basically flying around creating havoc for fun. RealtimeUK brings out the cinematic big guns for gaming in destruction and aviation. Check it out; feel free to comment.

Thanks for the production focus, it's a great cinematic.

[suggestion: don't auto-play movies. Especially movies with sound :)

I was actually on the Realtime UK site last night, looking for just this, a making of...

So thanks guys for putting this together, and congrats to the dudes over at realtime uk for putting out such an awesome, kickass cinematic.

ARticles about this trailer popping up everywhere REALLY make me want to know more about that game. It definitely looks like something I'd play.

Great work RTUK :) I am a big fan. You cant really go wrong with planes and explosions! and you proved it well.

I had seen that great cinematic a few weeks back. It's nice to see the details behind it. Some impressive work done by all involved.

Being a big aircraft flight sim fan, I was disappointed to read on shacknews (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/56588) that THQ pulled the plug on the title for being "too high risk" some weeks back. :sad:

As a fan of Ace Combat and the Airforce Delta series, I would have been all over Stormbirds. Pity it got canned. Great cinematic. Oh well, I suppose there's still H.A.W.X.

wow, this cinematic is really mind blowing. love the overall design of the environments and the aircrafts. awesome effects, especially the huge mushroom cloud near the end.

It's true... I was secretly hired by E-on to spam this thread. I was recruited years ago and have been masquerading as a semi frequent poster for the last four years, just waiting for my opportunity to strike. For my trouble I was paid 0.00001 cents....so only another 10,786 spam posts and I can finally get that mouse pad I've been eyeing, sweet deal! :buttrock:

Congrats on such a great animation! It has a strong matte painting feeling to it which goes just fine with the "alternate time" it takes place on.

A small criticism though... come on guys, a wanna-be TomCat pulling Pugachev's Cobra on wanna-be Flankers?!?!?! That's a bit surreal to say the least. Too much "Top Gun" still??

It's really nice work.

I was reading the article, and there seems to be several work flows combined for the environments.

1. Environments were created in Max. Then exported to Vue. Additional environment details were created in Vue. The Max and Vue scenes were rendered and composited together (motion blur handled trough Max motion vectors).

2. There were also scenes (or layers?) where Max and Vue still renders combined in Photoshop and re-projected onto geometry in Max and rendered with moving cameras.

Did I understand that correctly?
What was the thinking behind each choice?
Distance from camera?
Scenic detail?

Was Vue only for placing and rendering trees?

How was the atmospherics handled (clouds)?
