For my current project, I need to displace several planes in order to make piles of leaves, trash, etc. I'd rather not have to actually displace the solid mesh, which I've done before, simply because of the heavy poly count it involves. The advantage to doing it that way, though, is that I can displace the mesh in a single direction, in this case Y. I love Vray's displace function, and would prefer to use that, but I'm wondering if there's a way to use it just along the Y axis. Now, I'm using opacity maps and all, so it will only displace up and down on a plane, but I'd rather not have it displace down. Is there a way to control the direction of the displacement?

I think there is a input that lets your control the vertical or negative shift of the displacement.

I'm using just the Vray render displacement in the material editor. I haven't used the Vray displacement in the modifiers. I assumed it was the same type mesh displacement as Max's displacement and would require a poly heavy mesh to achieve good results. Is there a difference I should know about?

Thanks. I decided to use displaced meshes on this project, only because of time constraints. But I will study the Vray displace mod, and once I learn to use it, will go with that in future most likely. I'm still very very new to Vray, and having to learn a lot about the various functions. But I do deeply love the Vray render displace. It's better than any I've seen, and far better than bump maps. By far.
