It won't open, my computer had to me shut down when I was saving it. The file size looks about right. Is there anyway I can recover any of it?

No Autoback of it... any ideas?

If there's no Autobackup of it then I'm afraid you're hosed.
Hopefully you have been saving periodically so you don't have to start from the beginning.

Well you can always try to merge the scene or the geometry it contains into a new scene, on a per object basis, but it depends...

Depends if the scene contains corrupted geometry, in which case you should be able to merge all that is fine, but at times and especially when it's the machine that crashes and not Max itself, it can happen that the file itself gets corrupted, in which case you can consider it's lost.

I do hope that you have a somewhat recent saved file of your work ! (increment saving is a good thing too)

You could try doing a "merge" instead of opening it. Sometimes that works. There should be some sort of an autoback for it, though. Unless you turned it off. I think the default is every 5mins. Are you 100% sure there's not .bak or .max file in your autoback directory? If you've got a recen .bak file, you can just rename it to .max and it will open like a regular file.

Sucks to here that though. Save incrementally in the future and set you autoback to save every few minutes if your system can handle it.

OMG 3DZealot you are my hero, there was a .bak file!!!

I made the mistake of doing something else in max after I shut my computer down so the Autobaks were of something else. and I tried merging and nothing happened, but there was a .bak so now everything is cool

Agreed. I forgot but sometimes the Merge command will be able to restore your scenes.

Thanks for the reminder 3D/Mouj:thumbsup:

Once Merge didn't work for me.
I had to export all objects to individual 3ds files. (I could open the max file, but I couldn't work with it. As soon as I did almost anything, Max would crash.)
Then load each one individually to see if it was the culprit with bad things.
Sucked, but it had me up and running again.
