With a basic texture i decided to explore the effects of HDRI lightning on this model. I know it became too bright i will adjust the GI mix settings to dampen it down a bit. There are a few questions i have:

1. The shader on the model has chanlum in the luminance-channel and as far as i understand it works only with regular lighting that cast shadows? or am i wrong? As per my eyes i cannot see the chanlum in this render.

2. How to achieve both chanlum effect together with HDRI-lighting? Will regular lighting combined with HDRI set-up be too bright and/or take away the HDRI effect?

3. I want to add volumetric lights as glowing transparant spheres around the hands, for the "magical" look of course =P. Will this mess up the HDRI aswell?

4. Will regular glow in a material be "outshined" by HDRI-lighting? This is because i want a faint aura surrounding the model.

The reason i ask is because it takes a tad bit too long to testrender every time because of the radiosity.

Have you truned the auto-light option off? This can sometimes contribute to longer render times. Having said that, it is quite easy to forget about the auto-light option... I know I have ;)

auto-light is off. i am currently in process of a render with regular lighting aswell as the hdri-setup. i will show how it looks when its done.

meanwhile here is what it looks like with radiosity turned off.

I'm pretty sure Chanlum only works with regular shadow-casting lights. You could try mixing lights and GI, but that would require experimentation.

Regarding volumetric lights--you could use them but simply turn off diffuse lighting in the Details tab. That way you'll get the volume effect but no direct lighting.

The glow channel is a post-effect, so it won't affect the HDRI lighting.

tx for the info on glow i did not know that, and the tip on the volumetric. Here is what i got after 14 hrs(!) of rendering. radiosity and chanlum and volumetric put my rig to the test =P
