Hello,

This is my first vehicle, so I was kinda hoping for some feedback before I get into the final stages of modelling. I've still got a few more things to model so try and ignore the lack of wheels.

Any crits would be very welcome :)

Quite nice so far. But did you do orthogonal-renderings of the "User"-view in 3DS-Max? ... don't you do that. Looks kinda surreal. I'd suggest simple perspectives always!!

And your modelling style? You got several meshsmoothed patches, right? Damn.. I shouldn't open my mouth so soon  but wouldn't Nurbs-modeling be better for cars?
I'm about to model a car too, but I planed to do a quite simple mesh to scetch proportions and then model the Nurbs into it...

But keep it up man! nothing Is meant to be offensive... hope that you can grumble about my shit soon...

Hey Ewerybody thanks for posting - when I'm modelling stuff in Max I always use the othogonal views so as to get a clear view of the model. Probably should've rendered out of a camera before posting though :)

I did think about Nurbs modelling before I started - it does seem to be the logical choice but after I'd seen loads of people use poly modelling for cars without any problems I thought I'd go with the technique I found more comfortable really...

Cheers for the crit, hope to hear more from you as I progress :)

I'd work a bit more on the rear of the car, particularly on the rear corners. Some creases arn't steady and even, and there is a bit of "folding" going on in the mesh.

The hood crack looks a bit to soft, I'd make it more crisp and sharp looking. It just looks a bit cartoonish compared to the door cracks.

Cheers Error404, I realise there's plenty of issues with the rear of the car. Will fix all the smoothing errors soon as I can :)

Thanks also for pointing out the hood looking too soft - will sort that out as well :)

good one! cool update. nice details yet. looks awesome since u post the perspective ones.

So whats it all about the meshsmooth modelling for cars? Do you put several edges together for a corner that should be more hard?

I just didn't start so far :hmm: but did some more sketches. You know.. I was a lil skeptic 'bout mesh smooth. But I don't want to teach myself nurbs modeling as well..

I don't know if this is really just painted on or not, but it looks slightly strange to me that there is no rear roof support.

If you look at this picture from Mini USA:

It seems like there should be something back there. But if that's really just painted on, I'm sorry I mentioned it.

The model dos really look great though! :applause:

bradfordjloos - yup, you're right. I'm still working on the windows and rear of the car. Hopefully by the next post they'll be done :)

unknown limit - cheers

ewerybody - what I did was to block out the shape with polys and then detach elements and use the chamfer tool, along with shift-dragging edges to create the creases. I'd recommend going with meshsmoothed polys if you're more comfortable with them than Nurbs :) Let us know how you get on...
