I don't really know much in the way of comics, but I always thought Captain America was a tacky superhero.
You've changed my mind with this image. Incredible work all around.

First off Captian America has to be one of my favorite Marvel characters because he embodies the USA. He has that cross between the mainstream and the Ultimate version, the shield looks has a battered up look (maybe one to many hits from the Hulk?) but he has that tough gritty appeal. Want to know is it high or low poly? did you model each link of his scalemail or is that a material?

Very nicely done. fantastic work on the shader/maps for the suit, and skin shader. you made this superhero feel ..strong and kickass ( when, to me, the original one is quite sh*ty). So, great job.
Would love to see some base-mesh wires and maps. (is this normal maped, or straight-from-zbrush-high-poly render?)
+ can you quickly tell us what you did concerning the shaders // lighting?
only crit would be the background could need more work. maybe - tho still blurry - make it an american flag, avoiding straight vertical lines .
Anyways thumbs up :)

very nice...kickass shading and modelling
as far as modelling concerns the short legs have already been mentioned (but he might be a sitting giant/sitzriese), but then ...the very low sitting ears make him look a bit ....cute ?! :surprised
otherwise great work

Man, that's all kinds of awesome!!
IMHO, He looks perfect, but what the hell do I know? I'm not a character modeler.
Maybe when he's tired of the whole "Superhero" thing, he can fall back on a Career in porn. I mean, that's quite the set of gentleman's baggage he's got there... now I know why his legs are so muscular!...
But seriously... you did a great job! The modeling, texturing and lighting are all fantastic! 5 stars from me as well

a model 3d correct, but we must observe aspects of work, for example, the character is very low, background is not good, and the character appears smoking without any relation with the illustration, I think that illustration has several topics, composition, values, family of colors, etc... and these items should be worked, excuse my poor english, plese

thanks everyone for the replies, all of your kind words makes me want to do something new :) The base mesh was modelled in Maya and the fine details were sculpted in Zbrush. I then rendered it in Maya - mental ray. The scene has a fill, key and rim light plus some HDRI and final gather. I will try to take some wire screen shoots and post them to. Iīm currently working on some new stuff so hopefully I will post something new soon :)

hey svenjuhlin
First of itīs an amazing piece of art here and there`s no critique on the execution itself. Very well done.
But when I saw it, there were two things that distracted me rightaway:
Cap would never ever even toch a cigarette or cigar. Thatīs totally out of his character. Heīs the kind of guy that would encourage anyone he sees with a cigarette to skip that habbit rightaway.
Second is his shield: whatever happens, no matter what kind of mess heīs going through, the shield wouldnt even take a single scratch. Itīs sthg comparable to Thors Hammer. The symbol for his strenght and his will: Itīs undestroyable.
But as mentionend before, it`s very well done!

My crits on the Captain America character agrees with what has been mentioned here before plus this: This guys looks like a Captain America act at a circus while taking a break behind the tent between shows - not a real super hero at all. To me, this seems almost like a Hancock version of Captain America.

I'm guessing it's because he's not in an action pose, for getting the "it doesn't feel like" comments. But super hero's need some down time too. I would love to see you put him in a better pose as well, but the simplicity is what originally made me like it, so in my opinion it isn't needed. I would like to see some wires as well. NICE WORK!!!

That Cap is the old one, the man who inspires all the other superheros, cause they are childs wen capi kick "the bad guys @ss"
by the way the old ones (like me) remember The Captail smoking after a long day, but last years it was change to "political correct maners" no one wants his child dream was to smoke like Wolverine
About the work is just perfect, keep doing it (wow man double pluged)

Perfect!
A powerful rendition of Simon and Kirby's original defender of truth and justice. A Timely piece indeed, though a much darker version than the original!
I feel that you have caught the period very well indeed in this character. It evokes feelings of the 20's/30's, a time of rapid change and contrasts, the survivors of the depression and the new industrialists, the golden age of baseball, gangsters, cinematic splendour, political turmoil, war, grit, grime and injustice. His shield and costume look like they could have been made from automotive/aeroplane parts. This guy looks like he intends to set a few things straight.
Do you have plans to animate him?

i never really saw captain america with a cigar. this feels more like a wolverine thing. captiain america to me is a bit more like superman. more clean the ultimate role model. but thats what i think, when i think of captain america.
but as for technical modeling. its hella badass. i really like it. great job.

First off I certainly applaud you inthe technical expertise and quality of the work. It's quite nice.
On the downside, you really didn't capture the spirit of Captain America at all. If anything, I woudl think this was one of the "wanna-Be" Captain America's that tried to replace him when he became the character Nomad way back when, or tried to replace the character after he was killed in 2007.
And as others have pointed out, most definitely not an authentic Shield. Cap's shield wouldn't be beat up like that, it's withstood both the Hulk and Thor's Hammer in the past without a scratch.
It would have been nice to have seen a character that captured the spirit of accomplishment and hope that the character is supposed to stand for.

Are Comments like the one above a joke? Nobody could be so blind and can't see the point of this (great) image.
Wow. you're a comedian. Blind? can't see the point?
Looks like the joke is on you.
The big problem with the "beaten down hero" is that it plays into the whiny American Negativity of the "glass is always half empty", everything sucks doom and gloom mentality.
Kind of like watching Battlestar Galactica, which is an almost unwatchable hour of people feeling sorry for themselves. You almost want to put a gun to your head after watching it, it's no wonder that character blew her head off last night.
The whole idea of the "Hero" is to be a positive larger than life representation of the best of what we are, not to embody beaten down, but to symbolize hope.
This is an excellent work of art, and it's certainly quite an accomplishment. But I stand by what I said, it doesn't Capture Captain America. Even at the worst of times, Steve Rogers was positive and optimistic, he couldn't be beaten down.
I could buy this if the man in the mask is John Walker, A.K.A. US Agent.

America used to be considered pristine, with unwavering power and righteousness. Im not sure if it was svens intent, but i could see this as a commentary on Americas downward less the righteous actions in the more recent times. Hes beat up bruised and ragged. Sounds like america to me. And i live here.

Excellent work but I have to say as a comic fan this doesnt look much like the cap I have seen drawn a million times.
The smoking is something completely out of character, the face doesnt look how cap has been drawn previously. He was a good looking, blond haired, strong man an almost idealised perfect handsome man but this one makes him look more like a thug who you would imagine works for a sleezy gangster, breaking peoples legs.
The reimagined cap that was brought into the new Ultimates series was designed to make him more realistic and gritty but still kept a lot of his great qualitys.
The pose I have to say doesnt feel right, if you look at some source material of cap not fighting he still carries himself with confidence and dignity, but the pose here just looks as out of character as the smoking.
I think you are a great artist and your skill at building a realistic character is excellent but I would suggest going to the source material you are pulling a character from and if you are trying to portray that character then you should use some of that material as reference.
I can understand you wanting to create your own style of cap but its still important to stay true to the original character, otherwise you may as well just throw a costume on a monkey and call that captain america as well.

Incredible artwork!
That is an inspiration for me to keep practicing more and more. Thanks for sharing your work with us and taking those hard critics.
I must say that seldom our favorite super heroes are shown as they trully are when not in the comic books. For instance, I love Daredevil and I got really surprised when the movie came out. There were many differences between the movie and the comic books. Of course when the translation from the comic book to the big screen had to be made, many things came out quite differently (not only small details), because those are different medias. In your case, I read some harsh critics because heīs holding a cigar and the shield was all scratched, but they also must remind that this is your personal interpretation, and artworks always come with the painter/professional own personal touch.
@ Everyone not liking the "worn captain America"
"Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the sense or emotions." You can interpret the worn super hero anyway you want. It could represent a variety of things, such as super heroes no longer being the idealistic perfect men we envisioned as kids, as we grow older we learn the world isn't as black and white we once thought it was.

Awesome. All things are created in the mind, and then by action. This is just the mental image, I had of a 3-D Captain America. I like the facial contours, the sturdiness, the proud glare he is giving. The posture could have been better though.
I would like to assume that the creator has deliberately refrained from proportioning the appendages too much, which is a bit stylizing this figure. That is the real cool thing about these characters and I love it.
The texture of his body suit, it is quite appropriate in my opinion.
Unique, Simply awesome.

Congrats on this (and on your other works: I arrived here from your Portfolio) .
I had seen this in the top bar before but hadn't looked at it because I'm not into superheroes. I don't even know who this Captain America was.
What I like very much is that you here portrayed a human hero, a seasoned pro who has been fighting for what he considers to be the good cause and who is prepared to continue doing so if needed. Yet he has the "been there, done that" mentality and leaves more to the new generation. He's experienced enough to know he's a loner and he doesn't give a damn for being politically correct or incorrect as the evil he fight goes deeper than the changing fashions. Love the cigar which makes me think of those lines by Pink Floyd:
" Come in here, dear boy, have a cigar.
You're gonna go far, you're gonna fly high,
You're never gonna die,
you're gonna make it if you try,
they're gonna love you. "
Really outstanding! As is your Hammerhead. Space marine and Juggernaut are more games style, very well done, but not much my style, and the werewolf is a masterwork in texturing. Only question I have with all them bigteeth'ers: how can they ever close their mouths?

01-22-2009, 01:30 PM
First. I like it a Lot.
But it lost a single Star (IMHO), cause i don't like cigarrets...lol.. And, i don't know why, that "acessory" doesn't fit with the rest of that image (imho again). Man, look at that body, the guy looks like a 20 yrs old boy filled with pure helthy. But the looks of the image, the treatment, the cigar, his face, and the mood, looks like an old "captain", retired from job...
It looks well dressed and with good integrity on cloths, but the shield looks like a trashcan "cap". The "star" on the shield looks a bit too "extruded" from it... But it's a design option, ok...
There's a lot of comic characters using cigarrets, and they look ok, but something is missing on that one to fits better with the mood (imo)... I don't know, maybe it's because of the background history of this character, don't fit to well with a "bad boy" image.
His face looks like it's from an older guy with more "mass", but the body don't follow that spectation.
It's a GREAT work overall, despiting my crap comments. :)

His shield doesn't get banged up like that.
Read:
The shield has great aerodynamic properties: it is able to slice through the air with minimal wind resistance and deflection of path. Its great overall resilience, combined with its natural concentric stiffness, enables it to rebound from objects with minimal loss of angular momentum. It is virtually indestructible: it is resistant to penetration, temperature extremes, and the entire electromagnetic spectrum of radiation. The only way it can be damaged in any way is by tampering with its molecular bonding.

Wow...gr8 Modeling. The dirt looking texture is quite nice. It gives the impression of "After a Day's Work"...kind of COOL.
Nice work!:applause:

The old captain america aged about 50 years, smoking! Excellent! But not Really "moral majority"....

The rendering and modeling are top notch, quite simply stunning work. The attention to detail is awesome, I really like the detail and wear and tear on the shield and the scales of his suit. Details like that really sell the image to me.
As for this looking like Captain America, well my inner comic geek says no. Cap has blond hair, blue eyes and he's the all American generic ideal of peak male form. The super-soldier serum that he was injected with turned him into a perfect physical representation of a super soldier. Think of Dolph Lundrens role as the russian boxer from Rocky 3, only shorter. Plus Steve Rogers / Captain America is a boyscout. The last thing he'd ever do is smoke a cigar, infact he'd probably smack it out if your face if he saw you smoking. Even the Ultimates version. In the Ultimates, he hasn't aged a day when they find him while all his friends around him have become elderly. He probably feels like a relic from the past stuck in the future. Everything is foreign to him from social customs to pop culture. It's be like sticking your grandfathers mind into a strong young Brad Pitt.
Anyways this information is something I'm passing on to you as advice for future reference, in no way is it meant to take away from your amazing skill as a 3D artist as you are clearly a master of your tools.

This model looks amazing! There's only a few things I'd change. First, Cap doesn't smoke, lose the cigar (maybe for Logan, but definitely not Cap).
Second, the shield is made from Adamantium, it's practically impervious.
And lastly, the face you've given Cap although it looks amazing, the modeling is brilliant, he looks like a thug, not a proud american soldier. I wonder if this version is modeled after the Frank Castle version.
Please don't take my critique to heart, the job you did is absolutely fantastic. But from a comic book geek standpoint, there's a couple details that don't adhere to the image of Captain America that has been portrayed by Marvel Comics.
I couldn't model his boot as good as you, let alone anything else.
Keep up the great work though! And as a personal favor, could you model the Green Goblin?

Beautiful!
The modeling of the muscles and the shirt/mail material are incredible! The best thing about it is that he really seems to have a lot of emotion behind him...
Great model and render!

You did an outstanding job! Don't listen (read) to negative nick picking comments: obviously it reflects their jealously, their lack of creativity & their lack of appreciating something different and unique. Keep doing what you're doing because you're on the right track.
Peace to you & your loved ones.

Great work!!
this character has a lot within the design of it. te loose fit of the star emblem, the pose, the cigar etc. It has a lot of character that creates a amazing feel. BIG UP for this one man. A great take on a known character. A take that takes the known into a new casing.
Really good light and materials in the render to.
BIG UP
A very fine job
The rendering soft and eye pleasing. I would have loved to see him in a more dynamic pose especially when he you decided to have him smoke a cigar :)
Overall good stuff!

Outstanding work! Something that is done so well doesn't deserve one single crit. Even though I could agree with some of the crits I've read, I won't say anything, at least until I become as good as you. Respect!

Really beautiful work! Love all the textural qualities to the piece!
My only geek crit would be that shield really shouldn't have any dents in it. It's pretty much indestructible. (http://marvel.wikia.com/wiki/Captain_America%27s_Shield) Paint chips and scratches in the paint would be ok though.
It would be great to see you do another comic hero!

I think you did a great job, the only thing that is a little of is his shield. I love that you made it look war torn but in the end there are a few dents and stuff in it, but his shield is indestructible and as far as i know can't be dmged like that. Thats just a comic neerds nit pick. Still 5s man

LOVE IT - very Frank miller-ish feel to a familiar figure. Cap seems to be older and very war weary here- quite the change from the poster boy image we are all so familiar with eh?
I love this suit dude. Living character with amazing style, texture and wise detailed work.
