Hey guys

Due to popular demand, speed modelling challenges are back. I dont know for how long, but I am definitely in for hosting a few over the next several weeks.

The first one will be fun. The idea behind the first challenge is to make a custom “Potatoe Head”. The way we will do this is by making quick studies of body parts, and when we are finished, we could share some assets with the community using the attach function in the forum, or uploading them to your own server and sharing a link to the asset. then at the end of the challenge if we have enough participants people could download a few parts and start combining them for some funny collages/ assemblies of sorts.

So, the challenge for the next week or so ( I will extend this if need be ) will be to create studies of human parts. Create noses, ears, eyes, fingers, hands, feet, etc, etc. Try to make sure that they are water tight, so that when people combine these parts, that there are no holes in the model. ( for extra fun, you could model them as if they were a real part for a toy. Joints and all )

You could do things like model a nose and make a series of multiple ages or noses from different sexes, to try to get a number of variations into the mix. There is a lot of subtlety that changes the forms of all of our parts, so be creative!.

In case you have been living in a cave, here is a few examples of what Mr. Potato head looks like:

http://coppola.rsmart.com/files/u2/potato_2.gif

RULES FOR CURRENT CHALLENGE:

Create realistic studies of small sections of the human anatomy. ( eyes, nose, ears, feet, etc. )

The time limit on each body part will be 1.5 hours, so use your time efficiently.

You will be able to create multiple parts, or multiple variations of the model part that you created.

Model what you feel that you need practice on, nothing is off limits, including parts where the sun don’t shine.

I want everyone to post within this thead. making too many threads will offset and complicate this forum a bit too much with the other challenges that people have going right now.

Have fun, and try to learn.!
Side Notes:

Use What applications you like, Including Zbrush, but if you plan on sharing your asset, try to make it something that is easily shareable/manageable. What i mean by this is that it should be a small file size/ polycount. It will keep things easy for everyone.

If anyone has the opportunity and the means, I would suggest for people to try to record their process and perhaps get their process onto youtube. This way we can see you work :) and see how you meet certain challenges. Its just a suggestion

IDEAS FOR FUTURE CHALLENGES:
here is what should be possible with the Mr. Potato head concept.. I am thinking that the next challenge will involve the same concept but instead of human parts, we could work up starwars character parts. light sabers, helmets, guns, etc. It will change the theme a bit, allow us to model hardware, and then make funny assemblies :D hope that enough people will be into this so we could pull this off :D after that, we could do things like model parts for motorcycles, and try to assemble parts for those, into our own flavors of vehicles. If this challenge proves successful, and the community would want to continue this flavor of challenges that is. Stuff like this, but perhaps more realistic and refined:

GOOD LUCK!

Here's my little show of support:
It took me about half an hour, sadly that's all I've got done. As you can see I am no organic modeler. If I get time I will try modeling the hand using a different method as this was really messy and hard to manage the overall shape.
I used my own hand as a reference.

Try not to laugh!

my problem is the fact that i am attempting something that is hard for me to do. I've never really done a good ear. And so I keep messing up and getting discouraged, but I promise I'll try and get it done sometime this weekend. Whether it looks crappy or not.

ok, here is something I kinda worked on... didnt have any idea how to make a realistic eye or body for the mr potato head without making him not mr potato head, so I just made a quick body and eyes, textured them with something simple and am going to build off those...

The Eyes:

And The Body:

If anybody wants these lowpoly models as a base mesh or to just work around, post what kind of format you want and I'll see what I can do!

now Im gonna work on the ears...

BTW: The Body and Eyes took about 1/2 hour as well as the ears... I spent about the same amount of time (if not more) looking for reference.:D

well, its pretty late here in georgia, I'll take this up tomorrow, hard.

hmmm... is it good now? I see it, don't know what to do about it... I think it was my host. anyways I'll just attach them as thumbnails so I'm sure you'll see it. Now I'll stop wasting my day and work on this model...

BTW, is this what the idea was? I'm trying to get a realistic Mr potato head without making him not Mr potato head... I think that's what you were going with Ambient Whisper.

those ears aren't bad at all. And those eyes look pretty cool on the potato. tomorrow I should get my ears done, that is what i'm shooting for. I'm going to be pretty busy but no work, so i'm really hoping to get those finished.

Hey,

The idea that i was hoping for was for people to just build a part or two, and then share those parts with the community. if we would have enough entries, we could choose a few parts and combine it into a Mr. potato head. you don't have to build your own full potato head, but you can if you want :). its up to you. If you feel that you can make all those different parts on your own and have time for it, go ahead :D its great practice regardless of skill level!. good work guys, keep them comming. I will give some comments on those entries soon.

anytime. I will extend this challenge by a week and plug it on the front page after i get an example or two more done. I will work one up today for sure. Hopefully more people will enter then :). I didn't expect a huge turn out for the first one after this long a break anyway but it could be better :).

so, lets give you about a week more to get more examples done if you want, and then we will turn them in.

so about an hour of modeling, this is what I have on the hand. I'm no organic modeler. LOL.

There's a few odd looking places on it, but I put some joints in it to make slight posing and I didn't both with painting weights and so some of the adjustments messed with the mesh.
