View Full Version : how do I make child objects' material change?
erwin1978 06-25-2003, 01:42 AM I made an object and duplicated to several copies. Is there any way I can apply material changes to the parent object and the child objects automatically change as well?

If you assigning material to transform node of parent it will then take the material for it's child, you will need to assign other material to the child after you assign material on parent.
Instead assigning material to transform node you can assign the material to the shapenode, pick your parent object, hit down arrow (or `pickWalk -d down`). This will pick the shape node, you can assign material for this node without effecting the child.
This is a matter on what included in the shading group.

I think you may have mixed up your terminologies here a bit. A copy of an object is not the child of the copied object. It will end up being on the same level of the heirarchy, if I am not mistaken (well, if you have the "group under parent" option selected it will be).
If you have the same material applied to all objects, any change you make to the material itself should be evident across all duplicated objects with that material. If you make changes to the actual model, the changes wont ripple across (unless you instanced, rather than copied). In that case, you will need to make the changes to each individual object.
Best bet would be to make changes to the first object until you are happy, THEN duplicate it.
