View Full Version : MeshSmooth when mirror modeling
rquinn 06-25-2003, 12:16 AM ok i am making a low poly head
i modeled the left half and mirrored it to the right half
now i wanna meshsmooth the whole thing but its thinking as if its 2 seperat objects how do i make it 1?

What version of max are you using? Please mention this next time so you don't waste your time and ours being asked about it.
There are a few ways to do this:
If you are using max 5.x, then you can just use the symmetry modifier on your base low-poy model, then collapse the stack to merge the two halves together.
The alternative is to weld the two halves together. If you have made a mirror instance/reference of the half you have been working on, you will need to delete that half and remirror it as a copy.
Once this is done, simply click on one half of the model, click the ATTACH button under the Edit Geometry panel, and select the other half. This will merge the two objects into one mesh. Once this is done, you will need to select the vertices where the join occured (ie. in the middle of the mesh) and WELD those vertices together. If your model is properly mirrored, you should now have a whole mesh.
Then meshsmooth should work no problem.:)

quite easy don't warry
if u use meshsmooth is clear you used a poly modeling style.
once u finish the half remember to select and delete the internal faces, after mirror and attach, and in the end select the vertices 2 per times and click on "Collapse".
now add the modificator.
so
1) model and attach
2) delete internal faces (this is what you don't do!!!)
3) select vertices and collapse
4) apply meshsmooth
never more troubles with it...
