Hey wasimattar I really like your entry especially the color palette you have going in your entire piece. I just have one really anal nit pick. The way that the can of bug spray is sitting in front of the robot it looks like one of the robot's buttons is actually a flame coming out of the top of the bug spray, and since that flames near a combustible liquid isn't a good idea you may want to consider just moving the arm forward or back a bit. Other than that it looks great. Are your textures procedural?

Here is the current version of my entry. I know that the robot has a checkerboard pattern currently but that will change shortly, haha. I just played around with the lighting a bit more and added some glows to some buttons, which I realize already the unlight ones are two bright, but yeah. C & C always welcome.

Thanks for your critics i will sure work on the light actually its the button on the bots metal.
The material are made in photoshop with different texture for diffuse, reflection, glossiness and bump

Hey guys, just thought i'd try and help out a litte :)

phil-w8: Im already really liking your lighting set up, to me it gives the impression that the robot is quite friendly, as such i think it'd look really nice if you had some kind of light illumating his front side and a lamp illuminating him from the back, to highlight his shape and also to seperate him from the dark background. I think it would also look good if you tinted his eyes a yellowish colour and made them a tad reflective and had them slightly emissive. Just my opinion though :)

arunakavaram: I also really like this image aswell, The first thing that attracts my eyes however is the central air extracter, it's considerly whiter than the robot which is in the foreground, if you want to have the robot as the main focus i would focus a little more light on him, slightly removing some light from the air extractor, in my opinion that will attract the viewers eye to the robot. Also the button/ control panel directly behind the robot could perhaps use some vibrant emissive colors that are visible else where in the scene, this, in my opinion will also attract the viewers attention more towards the robot. having some light flood onto the robots surface will add some very nice highlights and touches to the scene, also, if you can adding slightly depth of field to the image, so as you look down the corridor it slightly goes out of focus, this again, will also draw the viewers attention.

All in all i really like what i see.

Note: this is just my opinion, i may be wrong and/ or you dont have to do any of it :P

ocularb0b: I was just checking this out over at blendernations, this is superb looking work you have here. One thing that does bother me though is the slight green lens flare to the lower right hand side of the image, in my opinion it is subtracting from the main focal point and also making the image seem abit chaotic, with the green lighting at the front and the paler yellow at the back, that is just my opinion though :)

Also what nodes are you using?

wasimatter -I like the roach killer robot job... I did notice that the yellow light on the robot chest looks sorta like the flame of a candle and its not obvious that the can is a spray can of roach killer. It looks sorta like he's holding a candle at first. It'd be cool to have a spot light with halo act as kinda of a spray like affect if that would work...

I finally got some time to work on this challenge, but since I've barely started texturing I'm not sure I'll make the deadline. So, here's a lighting test with solid colors on most surfaces. It's a bit grainy from undersampling.

I went with a horrible retro-futuristic Forbidden Planet/Star Trek color scheme of red-orange and blue over battleship grey. To me, those control panels don't look retro-futuristic, they're just plain retro (Modernize your factory for '68 with the latest in transistorized industrial controls!) so they have appropriate industrial colors.

Aside from textures, I still need to light up more of the controls, and I should probably put something behind the camera to give the robot more to reflect.

Rendered in 3Delight 8.0.1; render time for the various passes is too long to mention (I have an antique single-core 1.8 Mhz processor and a paltry 1 GB of RAM).

GreggeryPeccary: i really love the impression that you get from the robot of like "ohh dear" in a kind of puzzled way, im not sure if your going for that, but i think it's really good. About the colour of the robot, personally i would try and seperate it from the background a little more, at the moment it stands out, but not at first sight, it tends to get lost in the whole compositon a little bit. The colour scheme however is really nice, 70's retro feel, personally not my cup of tea, but none the less, a very good start :)

EDIT: just adding my latest image, straight render from blender. Alot of work to be done, mainly on the computer banks in the background and touching up the robot and the depth of field filtering.

Im trying to aim for a puzzled look on the robot, as if he is looking down at something and it doesnt compute with his database, or something along those lines. 15 minutes for this frame, that includes being processed by the nodes, i think nearly ever surface has some level of glossed reflections so all in all that isnt bad for blender, however i will try and get that down to 3 to 4 minutes if i can.

Adding another update....More work to be done on Reflections and the background.

I'm trying to show the first impressions of the robot when he sees space for the first time.Everything worked in Maya & mental ray & i know a lot of work to be revisited. Please feel free to suggest & comment.

MikeBraken -I really like the scene composition, lighting, atrium tank scene and button light detail. Was this rendered in mental Ray?
Just noticed a couple of minor details - the head seems to have some subsurface issues (some boxy edges at the front of the head), and the vertical structure texture seems to be stretched nearest the camera at the top right.
This is my favorite so far..

Hi Everyone, this is my final entry for the challenge but please feel free to post your C&C.
Everyone one did a great job on the file and special thanks to the modeller Juan Carlos Silva for giving us such a great model to work with.

Thanks Jeremy for all your comments as it gives a new way of looking at our work and makes our work even better with every render.

Eagerly waiting for the next challenge.

Best Of Luck To Everyone.

Hi Daniel8488, thanks a lot for this feedback, it means a lot to me.
You're right about lighting the front side, maybe it'll show more a friendly character.
One question though what kind of material do we usually use for the eyes? can't get a good result for the eyes...

thanks again Daniel8488 :)

phil-w8: Personally i used a fresnel material with a emit value of 0.3 with reflections, with a fresnel affect and a gloss value of 0.9. I think the normal image people think of when it comes to robotic eyes is bright glowing spheres or something along those lines, possibly with a high relfective value. I like the current material you have on the eyes at the moment, the eye on the right hand side however look a little dull compared to the left. You could try add some reflection to the eye material, along with a slightly higher emit value and perhaps a very small amount of specular reflection.

Also just a quick observation but i notice the array of cieling lights in the background, yet the floor is pretty much in complete darkness, i think if you add a wide area light either side of the walls just under the lights with a low energy levels, just enough to illuminate the floor and the walls, slightly. Also, just my opinion but i think it'd be good if you placed a fill light to the left of the camera at say eye level of the robot to illuminate his body a little more and get rid of those black/ darkend areas, just my opinion though :)

EDIT: Just while im waiting for a render i'll post up these images that i made, i didnt go with it however as i really didnt think it was that appealing.

Hey Daniel8488, funny thing happening to me, for the red light at the end of the hallway, it's actually hitting the floor and a part of the wall, but the floor isnt getting any light...
i will look into it..as for the fill light, you're maybe right, i'll give it a try.

Thanks again for your feedback :), i really appreciate it.

DanielWray

phil-w8: Looking again i see that it is illumating the walls and espeically the back wall, maybe the fall of range is just stopping it from illumating the floor, Im not sure about the inner workings of mental ray though, so i could be wrong. Also when lighting it is a good idea, or atleast i think it is, to use a few lights with lowered energy levels, with each light casting various hues (?) of color to give the lighting some variation instead of having one shade of red etc. But that may not be best for all rendering engines though :P

Also i think this will be my final image (or perhaps i will tweak it a little, i cant decide =/ )

Here's another version with gauges and different chrome materials for wheels:
High res version is HERE (http://www.flickr.com/photos/8011986@N02/3293906895/sizes/o/)

I tried to make the robot pop more by adding contrast with black panels, and darker lighting to the left. I think the chrome mirror material may be adding too much glare and strange reflections?

saborstudio - Hey nice lighting just a little porblem with the overall scene look is the scene lacks contrast I mean everything is in the scene is getting the same kind of lighting. The set is a space scene just try getting some blue natural light in the scene that would help you deifne the scene better.

denisign - Nice look to the scene just try adding some reflections in the scene.Try changing the texture of some of the elements in the scene as it will make the scene more interseting.

ahkiat - try chaning the overall temperature of the light in the scene. The scene is looking bluish.

reinhart82 - Nice contrast in the scene.I think you will need to work with the scenes texture.

runghcnt - Good scene. But the panel need to look little bit more mettalic.

V2 WIP. Lightwave 9.6 and Gimp. It's a bunch of layered images, DOF and film grain passed to Gimp. Still iffy about it all. Sparks 'trails' composited.

Nice phil! What happened to your volumetric light at the fan? I thought it kinda framed the composition down the centre quite nicely.

Brookselliott: Love the hallway/moon idea. And yea, the chrome is really too reflective. Maybe reducing and/or blurring the reflections a bit will give him back his left rear rim?

Dubreu: You have light sources, but no actual light. It's like the overly dark lighting of the AvP:Requime movie, would probably look great just can't see anything.

Send2raj: Reflections on the 'gazing window' would solidify the wall. Like your idea and would be interested in seeing the idea reflected.

Ocularb0b: A far overdue praise of your Blender entry! One of my super-secret personal favorite entries.

Bshao: The Purple light. Yea, the result was something that didn't work right and ended up purple. It's one of those iffy points, don't really like it either but then again it looks better then an off-white (just tried that). Something for me to revisit. :)

Perhaps you could make the corridor on fire? A red glow with a cookie that makes it look like flames against the walls might work...

You could then also add a small kick of red on his back left that would make it pop nicely against the shadow of the central corridor :)

MeanPi2: I like the sparks, but you really need to add some contact shadows for the wheels, actually overall could benefit from a good old ambient occlusion pass. The glow effects are nice but the overall images seems a little flat.

runghcnt: Nice start, you may want to consider lowering the lighting level at the end of hall, it is competing with the robot.

Sorry for being "out" for a while. So before I forget I'm using vray on a quad core with 4 Gigs of Ram and the rendering time are almost 45 minutes.
I tried to follow all the feedback given. I added glow (done in post prod), get rid of falloff in the vray materials (it behave quite oddly to control) tweaked light, add panels in the corridor, changed the color of the bot to be more consistent with 2001 Space Odyssey , added some light in the bot and twaked levels after compositing.
I think this will be one of my final I dont' know if I have more time to tweak it ;)

lol, you kidding? That's way beyond my level. Thinking about doing that makes the idea of living with purple seem like sex. In a good way I'm told. Yea, good, no nails and junk.:)

But for a plus the whole scene depends on the sparks and only just now, like 12 mintes ago, figured out how to control them. Seriously. The other renders it was just "Oh crap it worked!" and built on it. lol.

So if things work out the purple will be blue again..maybe..wouldn't count on it but sure, 1 in 5 chances..I need a drink now.

Haha no worries :D

i know what you mean - I'm having to relearn quite a bit in Blender as it's quite different from Maya which I'm used to.

For the flame cookie, a simple thing you could do is paint some sort of flame like texture image in photoshop or something similar and then put it as a texture on a flat square surface and aim your light through it. With the right transparency and a little ray tracing, you might get a nice effect across the corridor.

Good luck if you give it a shot! Otherwise, a deeper foreboding blue would work well too :applause:

Hope I'm not to late to join in.

I was thinking about doing something dramatic with the robot ... sort of crisis situation, robot is powered down in the fore ground with maybe a very dim light in his eyes with other lighting to suggest an emergency or ship invasion.

I've made a very basic blocking out of the scene so far. The top is lambert, the bottom is using a couple of quick mental ray architectural shaders, both with FG (low accuracy for now) on:

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y172/wil23/l18_02.jpg

Most of the shaders need work and I've got a lot of buttons to deal with too, particularly those in the top left BG and on the robot itself. I also need to think a little more about the texture of the robot, something subtle ... maybe some panel lines in displacement/bump.

And I think I should do something with the robots eyes ... not sure yet :)

Finally, I think I'll be adding a reasonably tight DoF and some glow/exposure/halo to the brightly lit areas. Here's a quick MR DoF render I did just to see where it's headed (no FG):

Hi.
This is the rough. I need to tweak...a lot. Any ideas on how to create more depth to the water? It's just a transparent with a caustic image mapped to it.

@a5tr4t - I really like this scene and your take on lighting it. I like the robot material and reflection. I am not sure what the bot is looking at though... not much there to look at.
I was thinking an under water dome light that is visible might give the pool some depth..

May add some light below the water it will make the surface have some hot area and it will also make the refletive caustics on the roof more beliveable.

Getting there ... I think the FG quality mixed with DoF is causing the wacky graininess so I need to up the accuracy which is a shame because the render takes a long time right now. I think if I cut down on the glossy samples on some textures I might be able to speed it up thought.

I wonder if I've gone too stylised when compared to some of the other beautiful photo-real renders that are posted.

I like your work.I dont know what Jeremy can see,im only see to much color variation, but i dont know where do you want to put the focus of the scene if is in the ladder then the back is too bright and behind the robot.

Maybe lowering the back and placing some mini robots showing his heads in the ladder like an invasion, also a more large shadow in the right like some big robot comming.

No need to be photo realistic, in fact whit some engines that´s the easy part, put some area lights, some basic materials and the engine take care of the rest.

Maybe in next challenges could be good mark some rules like "no radiocity, final gathering or similar",to make things more even and see the real work.

Personally i don´t take this as a competition, it´s just for fun.
Most of us have work to do and little time to do this ,so it can be taken too seriously.

Cheers!!!

@JorgeIvanovich
Thanks for the comments. In terms of seriousness I'm just here because I can get peer feedback that otherwise isn't always available. I agree with you about the photo-realism thing and as I mentioned I actually wanted to do something a little different ... so more Farscape than 2001.

My colour pallet work is never good to begin with and is something I need to work on. I think I'll try adjust the colours of some of the lights to draw the eye more to the silhouette it makes against the yellow/red corridor, see how that pans out :)

quicksheep
02-25-2009, 08:37 AM
I can relate to having a tricky time picking a palette. Usually your best bet is to find a photograph or render, (of anything from a movie, to a game, to a magazine, or something COMPLETELY random) in which someone has already got a successful palette that you like, and then use that as the basis of your own. For example, maybe you really liked the way a puck-light bounced off of a kitchen counter in a interior design magazine. There's no reason why you couldn't try to replicate a similar look in a science fiction scene.

Another useful resource when you just want to flip through tons of random palette ideas, is to check out kuler (http://kuler.adobe.com/) or one of the various other sites that offer a TON of palette inspiration.

Cheers.

Thanks to Jeremy for all the constructive criticism and the challenges as well. Looking forward to the next one!

So here's my final, since I won't have time to fiddle with it more. I can't say it's really what I wanted, but perhaps it gives you a chuckle, which is far more than I expect playing around with the pros. Yes, I know that the flame is the worst part of it all.

Software used: C4D and Vray, Faceshop Pro for the 'alien' head and post work in Photoshop C3 using Nikon filters.

Wow, what a month it's been. I really wanted to get some in progress posts up here for feedback, but after a grueling work schedule and a system crash that started me over I've had to race to get anything finished. This is a bit different than the concept I was working on pre-crash, but I think it ended up ok. I know it's right at the end of the challenge, but I'd love to hear C&C about it as I'll be continuing to play around with it.

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a277/synk2/8x6deus_tagged.jpg

I was really just going for a decently motivated and attractive lighting setup. It's definitely not fancy, as this is my first foray into lighting and I really don't know how to do a lot of the more advanced stuff. It's been a lot of learning along the way, but I feel like I have a grip on the basics now. I've still got to fix the textures for the lights in the corridor and finish up some texturing in the center part. I have a light in the back of the hallway, but somehow the parti volume I've got going in the center dims it out. I'll be investigating that asap.

I'd also like to say congratulations to everyone who entered; there's a lot of impressive work and not a bad render in the bunch. Inspiring work everyone!

A lot of really excellent entries here and I have really enjoyed watching all the work in progress. A lot of these final entry posts are amazing works of art.

These are just a few comments of some of the entries that I remembered as standing out or at least that I thought stood out so far in no particular order. I am no lighting expert but it would be tough to choose the best from all the excellent work done here.

@Slazzo - I think this is the best overall composition, lighting and interesting scene; although it does lack some detail, it gets the point across.

@a5tr4t - Nice reflections from the robot and scene layout, nice detail in instrument panel,
water idea is great with caustic ceiling reflections and subtle lighting effects.

@Jorgelvanovich - best texturing, story, and execution goes to Jorge's entry. Scary and makes you feel sorry for the robot.. although I am not sure about the lighting yet. I think lighting changes could have shown off the excellent texturing and realistic feel of the scene.

@MikeBracken - Best closeup, lighting, panel detail and best panel modification has to go to this really nice entry by Mike.

@herbertagudera - best artistic composition and futuristic look goes to corn's entry.

@baklabo - Nice detail and great closeup and I think strong second place for best futuristic look.

@shordy - the partially under water scene is really well done and panel detail is excellent. Nice even soft lighting in the latest version..

@phil-w8 - Nice pose and lighting detail from the fan and background lights

@jojo1975 - I think this is one of the best brightly lit versions although I am not sure about the floating orange color chosen for the bot but it does stand out. I think the 2001 Space Odyssy version is slightly ahead..

@Daniel8488 - I think I'd have to put this entry as the best animated look and expression category. Shows the possibilities of an actual robot character based on our scene.

@wasimatter - really like the bug killer, style and execution although I think the robot could have more standout lighting contrast. It seems a bit flat in contrast and color although this may have been the intent.

@madlamb - I think the best interior lighting and feel of a realistic interior feel. Although the robot could use more work. The wood grain panels look like a nice bomb shelter home away from home.

@ocularb0b - the best action look and feel I think has to go to this entry. A bit dark but has the best composition feel from a robot's persepective. Nice bokeh in the back ground.

Hee hee! Well not a cookie in the traditional sense, but if you got a flat mesh with a flame like texture and made it semi-transparent and raytraced the light through that, maybe that might work?

Hi Wadefuh, I think the original pov is a real strength in both of these. And I sort of like the washed out lighting because it's as if the viewer is coming around from some sort of blackout. In the second one, the bot is so reflective we expect to see our reflection in him given the pov and his angle.

Finally found the time to post an update.

http://www.axiomltd.ca/storage/photos/BoominGranny_8_final_web_alt3.jpg

Thanks goes out to brookselliot for suggesting I include a vacuum. Total brilliance. I didn't end up using one of those auto-piloted vacuums though, as cool as they are. I was drawn more to the story of a little robot struggling to use a vacuum that's almost as big as he is.

Another big thanks goes to jeremybirn for such a great learning environment, and to Juan Carlos Silva for modeling a scene with so much potential for great submissions. This has been a blast.

If I have some more time before Monday is over, I may try to get another version in, but if I don't, then this will be my final submission.

Cheers!

Nice images!

I wanted to just get this one in before the deadline and get some feedback. I need to add depth of field and some glows etc but this is just a straight beauty render.

I'll render the final piece in passes (occlusion, spec, diffuse, a few shadow passes for the various lights and zdepth of course - have i missed any?)

madlamb - I think this is the best brightly lit and even interior lighting I've seen so far and the robot is actually doing something useful.. Nice!

Kinnetic - I love that scene - the composition and the motion blur fit the pace and dynamism of the exploding corridor brilliantly! The bokeh at the far end of the corridor could be tweaked a little, but otherwise really really nice work. :applause:

Oh I didn't finish as I wanted too but I felt I made progress from where I started and felt like I was heading in a good direction. Everything else aside I wish I could have fixed the FG splotch artifacts but it wasn't too be :(

What I am happy about is that I think it feels very Sci-Fi which, in the end, is what I most wanted to achieve :)

Here's as far as I got to my final image:

There are so many beautiful images here, congrats to all !

Rendered in 3ds max 2009. Mostly direct light with just a touch of FG. Some glare added in post. Render time was around 30 minutes @ HD res.

Mike

Hope to see everyone in the next challenge.

I figured I'd chime in here since I've been in the loop with Jeremy and the challenges. Jeremy's been really bogged down with work and the current workshop so he's been hard pressed for his time. We have selected images for the Natural History gallery! They just need to be posted on Jeremy's site. As for this challenge I would continue working on it for the time being because I'm not sure on the status of the next challenges models. If it's not done yet maybe we will do a focused flashback challenge as Jeremy has mentioned, I guess we'll see. I have no doubt that we'll get things in gear for the next challenge soon!

Cheers!

It's technically past the deadline, but since the thread's not closed yet, I'll post this anyway. I wouldn't call this a final image since there's still so much I could do, but it's what I accomplished in (approximately :p) the time allotted.

Lots of fantastic entries on this challenge. I did some work on it when the challenge first started and then totally forgot about it until today. This is my first lighting challenge, and I enjoyed it immensely. I am not at all satisfied with the result, but it's still better than what I thought I was capable of.

Programs used are 3d studio, mental ray, and a little photoshop. Thanks for looking.

Well I don't know how qualified I am to give critiques but since that's the point of this thread why not huh?

@Spitfire001 - The lighting in your scene is pretty nice, very practical. The only thing about your image is that it's composition is visually uninteresting. Your subject is placed dead center in the image and there isn't any interesting angle. A lot of the exemplary renders I've seen in this thread have something going on in the scene, aka the Robot is doing something besides standing there. I think your scene could benefit for a little action. As is the viewer's eye is drawn to the robot which is nice but then your eye drifts back to the back wall where you expect something to be back there but there is nothing, so maybe you can change your camera angle to give the scene a little more interest.

I do like how the red and blue buttons bring our eye directly to the robot, and I like your shiny wheels :) One other thing is the eyes on the robot. One is catching the reflection from the button glows, ?maybe?, but the other one isn't and it makes it look like the robot has two different color eyes, which is a little unsettling. Last the far left panel on screen is a bit too reflective IMO maybe you can tone that down or blur it a bit. Good job!

@GreggeryPeccary - Everything in your image is looking good and is hilarious, how unfortunate for the robot!, except the colors that you chose for your robot is throwing me off a bit. The colors don't really fit into the color palette you have going, and IMO they are really over saturated, especially since they are no other real greens or yellows in your scene except maybe on the panels. I like how the colors bring your eye right to the robot but I think you can using some whites and lighter blues or something along those lines. Looking good though!

@Denidesign - Nice scene!

Good job to everyone who entered in this challenge. This was my first time entering and everyone has done a great job. Can't wait for the next one.

Hello everyone, i am a first time poster in the forum but i was just wondering if anyone else had issues with scale in the science fiction scene. its units are in centimeters but if that is true, then the floor lights are only 2.5 cm tall. that cant be right or am i mistaken

Sorry I've been AWOL for the past week or so. I'm in the last few weeks of production on the movie Up, and I'm teaching a CG Workshop now, among other things. Anyway, it's great to see so much terrific work got posted!

spitfire001 - That's a good start on the scene. The bright eye and dark eye, and the bright hand and dark hand, look like they are being left as accidents where you should really take control. The black surfaces of the character could use more kicks or rims to bring them out and give them some presence, and even the white surfaces could use a little more shaping.

stone cold ninja - Nice scene! A little washed-out and noisy in places, but you've started creating some variety in terms of different areas having different qualities of light.

chickenkts - Nice scene! I don't think that robot on the right will ever sell, though...

GreggeryPeccary - Welcome, nice take on the scene.

Leotril - Great job!

MonicaKruse - Nice image! I think you could do more with shadows and making the robot look back-lit.

MikeBracken - Beautiful work!

axiomatic - Interesting scene. It looks like something painful happened to the robot.

denisign - Great job! Nice interior decor!

AdamHerbert - Nice scene! To focus on just one light I wish it had darker and more consistent shadows.

MiekeJensen - Nice job, that's a really interesting scene.

jorgemomu - Nice Rosie model!

mooshy114 - Welcome, that's a fun scene!

kinnetic - Nice scene! The front robot could probably use some rim and kick light to help isolate the black-on-black parts and make him look more back-lit.

vaibhavcool83 - Welcome! That'a a nice scene. I don't think the long hard-edged shadow the robot casts really fits with the lighting in the set.

Pigments - That's a fun scene. The lighting seems very flat and uniform, but the nice pose with the cables makes up for it.

PolarBird - Nice scene!

swag - Nice scene.

Toru - That's great, interesting take on the scene.

abeld3dg - Nice scene!

brookselliott - Nice scene!

saborstudio - That's a really interesting image!

FluidEdge - Good start.

madlamb - I love it! The ultimate Roomba!

eduroam - Welcome, good start!

zmuh11 - Great scene! Nice color!

dboydesign - Great scene!

Kengis - Great image! Very engaging!

JorgeIvanovich - Nice scene, glad you gave him something to play with!

Thanks, everyone!

jacqu - Nice scene! Some of the smoke looks nice, although there's a strange shadow to the right of the robot that almost looks like another robot's alpha or matte cut into the smoke. The blue light in his hip area could probably be continued into rim light running up and down his whole back. It would be nice if the right hand looked as reflective as the left. The yellow surface on the right almost looks like a mosaic tile wall, as you'd find in a bathroom, instead of being as futuristic as the rest of the scene.

ahkiat - Nice job! You could do more with making those light panels along the hallway look fully lit-up, but I like the blue fill light, the shadows, and the solid chrome look of the robot.
