View Full Version : how do I change the pivot orientation of the rotation tool?

I'm trying to rotate several objects; when I rotate them they don't all follow the same. They seem to be revolving around their own rotation axis. So I grouped the objects together.

how do I change the pivot of the rotation tool? I know to press insert key but it only allows for translation and not rotating the pivot.

Select your group, or your object then go into componet mode and click Misc. (The question mark "?") You should see a axis gizmo appear that you can then rotate any way you want.
I recomend turning on discrete rotate with 90 degree values if you need the axis aligned perfectly.

Pic to help out.

When you go into Misc mode you are seeing the pivot for that object/group so if you rotate the axis gizmo you are changing the pivot for that object. Once you go back into object mode, you will see that the pivot changed.

Sigma, if you follow what Pyromania said, it should work.

Ok I see, you want to move the pivot point along the local rotation axis, but when you move a pivot with insert it uses world space instead of local space.

Yeah I don't think thats possible. Time to request that feature for maya 5.5 :D

you can translate the object on its local rot axis. they added that option in version 5.

double click on move tool and choose it.
