Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Tomasz Jedruszek

I know I'm creazy joining by two days before deadline, but don't blame me , I have huge amount of work to do. In fact I have to finish this challenge till tomorrow because I already have somthing else to do for monday ...ok ,Im just kidding ,lets get into it.
First: my idea is to show this ancient myth about Dedalus and Icarus , only with this difference I will set this story in future/non-existen reality of ... Venhelis world ! Yes , it is another CGS chellenge and for one more time it fits perfectly to my novel ,only one thing I will have to do is to change "the fleet" to look more steampunked. setting is to show Icarus as legendary ship who 's been shot down in non-explained circumstances and which wrecage still lyies somewhere of Hanvanukka's outskirts and once a year the people from capital city of MAkkendir going to celebrate "Icarus day" to remeids those breave heroes of last war...that sort of thing.

ok, i decided to continue this challenge even some obviously malfunction of CGS servers.

so here are some conceptual sketches as i was looking shape for main character- a steam-engine-like b-17 ..em..crossed with u-boot.

the main problem was the scale -when i was showing the Icarus I was covering the crowd, and while trying focus on characters ,the main subject- Icarus became non important background- but finally i found solution

basically it is a Icarus Day ,celebration ,lots of VIPs there ,some you may already know from my previous work about Venhelis, there are also some kids on rights side ,which beeing decorateing the old wrecage -for them it is whole different world ,they are starving and can't understand what is all about ,those flags, speaches etc. for VIps those kids remains unnoticable ,not existing ..for all of them? no ,one person , from very top of social hierarchy can see their poor life and problems , and that will be the reason for all future problems ...but those are actually fragments of my book besides it doesnt matter for challenge. I just choose this scene ,because Dedalus and Icarus myth is about dreams ,sometimes unreachable dreams - but did you ever think what are dreams for kids like that ? are they dreaming of hot food only or maybe some of them are looking on that wrecage and dream one they they will fly machine like that , and later as they make some careere as flying aces -will anybody remeber they were kids from reformatory ?

This is a really nice concept. I love the way you are thinking, and the ease with which you seem to come up with these sketches is highly enviable. Your characters in the last image are amazing - at least to me.
I love the fact you are not being literal about the concept. You really need to pause to find the Icarus and once you understand the metaphor you immediately start thinking more about other meanings. That's what the mythology is all about! Those are metaphorical life lessons.
I am trying to do a little bit something like that with my piece. Different story but trying to think about more than just decorating a mythological characters with steampunk style.

IKA-R 49/TT 297-P ,use to be called "Icarus" was one of the greates achievements of Makkenian's constructors. With maximum speed about 43 dl and top altidute high above 4000 suppose to be uncatchable and deadly as a Hawk striking from the sky at non expecting anything enemy and then just disapear in the fog. 134 men of crew ,including oficers. 8 torreto-guns and armor thick to -this is still classified- but noless than 15 ek.for sure . This ship has been build to prove high level of technical advance of Makken and ofcourse save them from War against Empire.
It's been destroyed on a very first day of the war by single hit of melting torpedo fired from Imperial new type destroyer . This tragic even show exact disproportions between those two sides as for technical advance. The new imperial S-UN CLASS ship has started completly new age of flying battles . 4 times bigger and twice that faster than "Icarus" ,armored only in 6 torreto guns but useing completly new technology -torpedos -which been able to destroy unit with single hit . It started the war and ended it at the same moment -with the crash of "Icarus" Makkenians has lost all their hopes to win the war. Years after the war they still remember that tragic moment of their history and celebrating "Icarus Day" for most " Icarus" is a patriotic symbol ,but to the others - like poor kids from reformatory ,who use to decorate wrecage before ceremony ,as a part of their re-social convertion-it is a symbol of dreams may come true , to be a hero ,a pilot or even simple soldier - this is their unreacheble dream to make their palce into history and no longer be unnoticable for the High Class... looks like someone has already spotted their presence, it cannot be anything good from that relationship,but this is whole another story..til another chellenge I guess :)
