I'm making some characters from Aladdin, and their skin is very reddish, should I make it a bit whiter than in the cartoons, and then make the lighting in the scene very red/orange?

basic 3pt light setup, all white

Go ahead and use the colors that you think are the "true" colors in your materials, like reddish skin if you want reddish skin. You could run into problems (like the blue looking too dark if your lights are too saturated a red) trying to compensate otherwise.
