hi all -

i've got a little problem that i can't seem to figure out. basically what i need to do with this image is wrap the veins (the stuff on the right) around the little spheres on the left. the vein shape needs to adhere and conform to the surface of the spheres, while still maintaining its thickness.

approaches i've tried:

creating the veins as splines and then conforming them to the spheres surface. this doesn't work, since you can't use the conform modifier on a spline, apparently.

my next approach was to convert the veins to a mesh, and then apply conform. this ALMOST works. however, when conform is applied, the veins lose all their thickness and the geometry flattened. it basically just looks bad .(see image below).

one suggestion i got was to pick points along the surface of the spheres, copy them to a new object, and convert those points to a spline. but i'm not entirely sure how to go about that.

any suggestions on how to get this done would be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps the "glue" plugin (scriptspot.com) is the right thing for you. Create the veins as splines, glue them onto your spheres and make these splines renderable.

You may want to try the free Glue plugin from Itoo Software. It allows you to project a spline onto a surface.

This script does that and more, even according to uv coordinates! this guys has some pretty neat scripts at his site.

you could convert everything to patches and give surface deform a go.

the glue plugin didn't quite do want i needed, but it's useful nonetheless.

the wrapper script worked great, though.

thanks for everyone's help.

Let's see a pic of the result.:)
