Hey, it looks really cool, from what I have watched, however the animation is taking ages to download. Do you have another way of putting the movie up, perhaps Vimeo?
Wow, awesome! Nice animation, and I love the textures! =]

very cool
most of the animation are cool , im very enjoy on it.
for the monster i will prefer the expression more extreme to show the contrast between the worrior and monster.
may be the mouth should open bigger when screaming? hahaha

Well done, Aik Sern! It was indeed a good trailer. Love the designs, light and rendering as well as the animation. My comment would be in 00:26 - 00:27, I don't think it is necessarily to have 2 camera shots on one character within a split second, it confuses me(the shot from below and then it cuts and pulls in out of sudden). Also, those cracks on the pillars and walls looks a bit unatural. The blade on the sword can be better, maybe enchance the rust slightly. And, would it be better to include the scabbard? Hope these comments helps and again, this is a really good work! Forgot to mention about how I like the villian to disperse when it faces deadly situation! :bounce:

Thanks Julian for the constructive suggestion , its an team effort and i believe the team have
done a good job. I do agree with the improvement that could be made on the sword and crack effects. And we will take note and hope to create a more convincing result in the up coming projects.

Well Done, everything looks great. The only thing I would suggest is expression on the eyes area of both characters can be enhanced. I would say if the acting on the eyes movement, winking, etc are given more depth, especially on the fighting part, the feel would be more intensifying.

First I must say all the cg is just top notch, very well done guys! Congratulations!
But if you ever think you might re-render this animation in the future, think about calming down the camera movements. Just because you CAN move a camera in a way that no physical camera or person's eyes could match doesn't mean that you should do it all the time. Once or twice in a scene like this perhaps, but not all the way through. Study older movies, don't just study movies from the last decade - and especially don't follow the example of game cut scenes. Even if you're all looking for jobs in the game industry... I would suggest that you would stand out as better than the rest if you managed to use the camera better than they do. Which shouldn't be hard. :)
Also it's probably best to not use the slow-mo trick more than once per scene. If you ask me don't ever use it more than once per movie even.

Great jobs guys, I really enjoyed the vid. The camera movements were little distracting but other than that its a sold project grats to you guys.

Oh gosh..this is the best malaysian 'food' to come back to (just got back from family trip yesterday). It was a wonderful experience to be part of the project, and to see it up after the many hours, days, weeks and months put into it is smashing!
I think we came a long way and it's awesome! The animation is especially fluid. Would there be a continuation? ;) If i might offer a couple a crits, i would say the two i'd say are on the focus/camera and the expression of the knight--the former gets a little confusing, and the latter is a little rigid. One of the best things i learned on storyboarding is the "cut-on-shots", and that was done reaaal sweet in the clip but perhaps there were too many too fast.
Effects: I like how the little particles and fog was added, perhaps there could be some rock bits blown outward (maybe even sharp 2-3 frames moment of light) when the cracks open for more impact, when the knight slides on the ground, when the monster was swung around on ground etc. Other additions could be like bits of sweat and saliva, saliva especially from monster's mouth.
Nevertheless, no doubt i think this is great, i hope my little nitpicks (darn habit argh!) make sense. I wish to see moreeee!!

Thanks Carlyn on the comments and suggestion :) i believe after this in house project we have definately learned alot about staging and how to present a sequence with a nice and
impactful camera flow, with your comments :) we will sure push our self even more in the next proj.
About the effects, will ask mr.simon to take note :) Hope to see you soon!

thanks Carlyn for the comments, actually some of what you comment about the effects it did appear at the clip, but thought motion blur or maybe it is too small, turns out hardly can see at the clips, but i admit that some of the effects you mention i did really miss out, anyway thanks for the suggestion, will take as an advice for up coming projects

I think the overall render quality is solid and awesome, congratulation to team PassionRepublic!
However my colleague & I agreed with stahlberg on the camera thing. Beside that, IMO it could be more powerful and harder when the man smash the monster. It doesn't look like that caused pain.
Another comment is the sound effect could be enhanced, I would expect the roar to be more solid though it might be the big space that has been taken into account, but a solid one would deliver more impact IMO.
But anyway, you guys are rocks and hope can meet with you guys if there is a chance!
AikSern
01-11-2009, 02:41 PM
THANKS tecsun for your comments! Will see what we can improve on the sound part, and yup hope there is chances to meet up in the future :)
Really, overall you guys did an awesome job!
Cameras are fine to me, looking at a commercialize action shorts, this is simply entertaining! I like seeing cameras move around and interact with the actions sequences.
However, the thing I would suggest to enhance is the framing and the DOF of the shots. Different focal length & f-stop can tell different aspect of the story in each individual shot.
Another thing is the animation of the characters, there seems to be less depth in these characters and sometimes they are moving too much into "animatin-principle-way", which in return will limit the movements and become unnatural.
BIG CLAP TO PASSION REPUBLIC!

I think the camera moving is good.
Maybe a better ending needed and this will a good fully short film.
The graphics quality is top.

It is a nice cinematic. But i have some comments on the animations. The fighting sequence is well planned for the action. But if you are looking for more realistic cinematic like Blizzard, Blur what they did. You can find out they will make the animations more to real human being. The fighting sequence is wooah great...entertaining but if can add more heavy weight fighting should be nicer. The moving cam should be less. So we can make it more to a Feature Film camera or we call it as physical camera.
Anyway i am happy to see a great quality cinematic made by Malaysian. I am proud of it. Well done!!

Hey guys, Good job! I think this is a really nice piece.
Great animation, great environments, nice pacing. The only thing that stood out ot me really, was when the four-armed guy was yelling, it would have been nice to see a little more motion in his face. Maybe his mouth opens further than what seems possible, his eyes bulge and the tendons in his face tense up, or something...just to make it more extreme. That's just a nit-pick though...everything else was well done :D
ben7259
01-11-2009, 11:42 PM
I actually think the Paladin moved 'real human' enough. We do need to consider if the character has been constrained by his armor or weight etc, what cause the physical movement(all the principals), but everything (physically) looks convincing & entertaining inside the short. Even in the live action films we watch today, the actors exaggerate something, this could really apply into animation, probably it's depend on how you define 'real life action' in film. I esp like the continuous fighting seq from 00:40 to 00:45 because I participated in that acting seq~ haha
Like some of them mentioned, paladin's eye contacts could be better as the eyes always play the main/important role in the shorts- the 1st thing we'll look at. Or exaggerate the eye brown a lil bit more, esp the beginning shorts that focus on his eye..
It's just my basic ideas & comments. & Again, you guys really did a GREAT job! really proud with you all~ & proud of showing around to others~! looking forward to your nxt projects.

Well done! Nice character design and good animation. I love the 4 status at the background ^^ If show more weight on the knight's sword will be better. At 01.15 - 01.17 min if the expression can more extreme and the camera more close up yet the sound effect getting louder will be better. The animation movement will be perfect if the motion blur is correct. OVERALL AWESOME !!! crazy thing!!! aik sern u don too stress if not u will look exactly like the monster ( skinny ....)

i gotta say good fighting animation and nice scale of the creature in endshot! looking good guys.
wow so many camera works! it could be redundant sometimes...
in the shot where the creature jump off the wall and hit the hero. maybe you can combine some shots together.
and with the slow mo thingy...too much of it kind of break the climax i feel.
great start and keep it up!
cheers

Amazing execution and almost perfect cinematography. The render looks professional but concept design wise lacks of originality. Well, maybe Im too picky on characters but neither of them appear to me, they look familiar (bold, monsters) and in a way reminds me of God Of Wars. The big monster in the end also reminds me of the Big Boss in Hell Boy 1. Maybe this is a good thing, you are able to fuse those famous games together, at least it opens up more attention from the western companies.
All of the above were just my opinion, but what I think was, this ting gona sell for sure. Well, u guys are really good... Im very proud to know u guys are from Malaysia. Gratz!!!

hey aik sern!
What a fantastic job! So good to see an old friend with a team has put up a great animation, really good stuff! Despite the comment about the animation shud be realistic, I actually think your animation is great. It never meant to be realistic anyway. Well, it's all up to the director. Keep it up, aik sern!

Thank you guys for all the critics, i believe our team will learn alot from all your comments.

01-13-2009, 02:57 AM
Excellent work guys! I thoroughly enjoyed that.
The only criticism that I have concerns the use of the slow/fast effect. Once or twice in the film is good, but use it too much and it becomes a bit tiresome to watch.
Still, brilliant :)

01-13-2009, 03:25 AM
Hi guys really impressive work...really love the modelling and texturing for the creature, overall pass composition and fx top notch!! btw what software and render engine did u guys use??
AikSern
01-13-2009, 06:41 AM
ALW-DaSilva , thanks for the comment. Maya and after effects are 2 of our major software,
and all render is done using normal software render and composite by our artist.
Hi AikSern,
You did an excellent job on the animation.
I do agrees with the others that the slow and fast motion editing is a little tiresome at times. And the skinny creature seems to be a little too rubbery for it's skin and materials. But it's undeniably a good showcase of your skills in completing this animation within 3 months.
Well done and hope to see more from your team in the future.
:)
However, I do finds that u might be rendered the animation without motion blur and applied the motion blur in post (reelsmart MB i guess). It seems to have some common issue with smeared motion vector results. This would usually made the animation looks a little less photographic. I always prefer 3d motion blur than 2d motion blur.

01-13-2009, 09:07 AM
Congratulations to everyone involved. Excellent work.
I think most things have been covered in previous posts but I would add - More dust being kicked up as they fight and possibly add a magical heat haze to the monsters roar at the end. Also some of the sound fx seemed to be panned away from the source.
Looking forward to see what you do next.

Hey bro, congratulations to you and the team. That is looking good. Maybe reduce the cameras movement can let's audiences read the content better? My eyes couldn't catch the actions and digest them for the first time I see and also can improve on animation hookup shots perhaps? The most obvious shot is when the knight holding his sword in 1:25 and 1:30, hope you won't find me nitpicks. Overall you guys done a good job and looking forward to see more from you guys. Cheers :)

Hey AikSern! Great work! Mind blasting! Had a blast watching it! It really shows loads of passion and talent from you guys there. My only critique would be the camera works , pose and expression. Camera works seems to be over done, too much camera flying here and there, sort of loose sight of the awesome animation, the poses I personally believe can be pushed further, maybe more dynamic compared to what an average human being can pose. And the expression, pushing it further to give the characters more depth. All in all, 5 stars from me.
Hope I get the chance to work with your team one day. I just love the passion you guys have!

I just watched the 2d & 3d previz & it looks really awesome- Like what you pointed out in PR webblog, we be able to alter & changes to improve in 3d animatic from 2d, to get more accurate timing & the fluent camera movement+composition. & from 3d previz we can really speed up the animation process. Again. it showed the right planning lead to the great achievement. Good example on how useful of 2d & 3d animatic in production pipeline, which some of the artist might ignore this simply (no offense). =)

This is reeeeally good. Very professional production.
I loved the mood, scenario, lighting, animation.
My only critic is that I found a little frenetic all the time, it looks that the sequence start at the climax. I know it is an action sequence, but I think it would be even better if the action and the camera movement would grow during the animation. But this is just a personal opinion.
Congratulations all of you for a fantastic job.:buttrock:

THANKS Chow Min,Fabricio and ALOK GANDHI for the comments and compliments :) and yup i believe everyone of our team mate have put in their heart and soul to ARX thats why we can finish the production within 3 months, but i believe in the hands of a more mature and experience team, it can easily executed within 1 month or 2 with a greater quality. sooo, with our passion and love towards art, we will always push our limits in the future to catch up!

Wow excellent! You did a really great job guys. I especially liked environment, post and basically everythig else. My only crit would be that you could've worked a little bit more on main character's head and that huge monster in the end. Keep up the good work!
