View Full Version : The most vital must-have plugins?
JamesMK 06-24-2003, 05:17 PM OK, so I looked through the threads in the resources-forum... There is quite a lot of stuff available to plug in, to say the least.
My previous experience (in the music-business) states that with such an abundance of plug-ins, there's bound to be quite a lot of not-so-useful and not-so-stable things around...
Since most of you guys have been into C4D a bit more than a week :D maybe you could tell me which plug-ins (free ones) I most certainly should get, and which ones I might as well do without.
I'm looking for the stable, useful and versatile free plugs!
Or, if I put it another way - If it was impossible to have more than three plug-ins, which ones would you keep?

congrats dude on getting the C4D.
Saw is very important, and useful.
All the free ones by peranders are good.

Whoa! James you here? Another Blender convert I can still remeber back then when you helped me out with a modelling problem on the Blender Forum James.
I likewise have decided to get C4d 2 Months or so ago. You wonīt regret getting C4d(I didīnt) I must admit though that Wings 3d is still a faster modeller.

Nhytro! OMG! So that's why I haven't seen you around the usual places too much lately... hah, fancy that!
I remember that modeling problem too. If I'm not totally braindead, I suppose you would solve that easily with the Better Boolean by now, right?
And, yeah, it doesn't seem like I'm going to regret switching to C4D. I'm really impressed by it so far. But I do still model in Wings too... :D
However, I didn't turn to Cinema by choice, rather by opportunity, once-in-a-lifetime style..
Anyway, good to "see" a familiar "face" in here. Cya around!

Hey James!
I have to say I was VERY happy to see you get the prize,
as I've been following your project for a little while now :)
I'm using C4D and Wings together as well,
and it's a kick-ass combo.
As for plugs,only picking 3 will be hard....
I'll give it a try tho:
definately need DiTools...Have no idea what I'd do without them.
Then there's ShearMoveRotate,I really like being able to use the mouse as rotation center.
Oh,and Axis Center is VERY handy.
Other than that,there's stuff like Dirtynuts and Baker and...and....argh...that's 5 I guess...I need them all tho :)
Good luck with C4D!
Where can you get ShearMoveRotate?

To be completely honest,I can't remember where I got it,
and when I tried to find it just now,I couldn't :surprised
No search results on google even,which has to be some kind of record.
Think there might be a link in the plugin thread in the resource forum tho.
If not I hope someone knows where it can be downloaded...:hmm:

Been playing a bit with DiTools and chanlum now... DiClone and tessa are pretty handy I must say...
flingster ---> Yeah, I saw that rib-thing. But the truth is that I'm really sick of fiddling with external renderers and beta-exporters after doing +3 years of Blendering :D I am sooooo happy with the integrated renderer :thumbsup:

everyones sort of listing off plugins. First of all, for stability, most plugins are verey stable, whe I think of unstable, some of the plugins designed for XL 7 may have problems in R8, but only a few, if a plugin has XL7 and R8 versions make sure to get the R8, Translucents has some issues, the most rwecent version is pretty stable, there is an issue with the transpearency channel, but Arnd't is working on (or released) and even newer verison that should fix this, the plugin is still worth it with the slight instability if you need SSS stuff.
Before I"d recommend any plugins, my question to you is what is your focus, what area do you think you will need help on, Animation, modeling, texturing? No use listing off a bunch of shaders if your concern is with modeling. My top plugins cover specific interests, so the only one I'd jusmp up and say you must buy (if you can afford) is pauls (link a few posts above) Sniperpro. How anyone can work without this tool I can no longer understand.
Well, here are my 3 plugins I could not do without:
- Weld Tools
- Splinimator
- Better Boole
Of course, nobody else has the same list, which just goes to show that everyone has different needs, just as Kaiskai said.

Yep, Fabian's are Fab!
My most commonly used in no particular order, not including Fabian's:
* powerAxis;
* Sniper Pro;
* Axis Center;
* makeThicker;
* Saw;
* Mess;
* Iron;
* DeepCutLiner (hate that name!);
* spinPoly;
* Edge Extrude Pro;
* CTS;
* Shave;
* Ozone;
* Point Collapse;
* Max UV Tools;
* Surface Painter;
* Visual Selector;
* Nickl;
* Aligner;
* MSA.
Damn I've spent a lot of money on plugins! :blush:
If I had to pick only three I think it would probably be powerAxis, Sniper Pro, and Axis Center.

WELD MANAGER is an assential plugin nobody should be without! Currently Cinema only Welds to the highest point and sometimes this point is the undesirable weld point and weld tool gives you more freedom too which point you want to weld too. You can pick weld to highest point or too lowest point.
The there is WELD TOOLS. The difference between weld manager and weld tools is that weld tools has a WELD TO CENTER function. So basically, You can pick three points in a triangle pattern and Welding to center will make three points to one point and centered the average of the three points.
I have both plugins, very useful.

yeah I kept weld tools for the weld ceter option, but I"m now using a plugin called point collapse, it allows you to select one point drag to the other to weld, this way theres no need to know which is the higher or lower order point, simply select the one you want to weld to the other fisrt and drag, so nice.

Same here. Alt + C is my weld center key.

Handy plugin from samir made right when R8 was released after many testers complained about the fact that not only was the selection converter not commands, but not even at least a non modal window that could be docked. Current to seleciton is three command that convert the current selection to which ever you select, points, polys or edges, using shift makes the conversion tolerant just like the convert selection dialogue does. One of those small little time save plugins that should have been done right the first time, thankfully samir listened and answered quickly. I use this plugin so much I've almost forgot it was a plugin, i have it assigned short cuts and everything its like a permanent tool for me.

Good stuff! I can't seem to locate 'Saw' anywhere though... Is that some sort of plane-cut or similar? I have to assume that it's different from the standard Knife somehow, right?
And another question (sorry, I will RTFM as soon as I get it), but I can't figure out where to 1) remap keyboard shortcuts, and 2) assign mousebuttons to camera movement (if it's possible)
On the other hand, I guess any changes will be lost since the demo doesn't save anything, including the prefs... *grumble*
LucentDreams

you can remap keyboard shortcuts using the command manager under window/layout.
As for remapping caqmera to mouse... still not possible in C4D :( sigh some day, someday.

AAAaarrrrgh! :D :scream:
I flip a lot between C and Wings, so it gets really confusing after a while... Oh darn, thanks for the keyboard info tho!

Saw is like R8's Edge Cut command (loop cutter), except that it lets you place the cut numerically between the selected rows of edges. Actually, being an XL6+ plugin it works on a row of faces, but same difference. Available here: http://home7.highway.ne.jp/winter-m/plugin.html
Pick up the other plugins while you're there. They're all quite useful.
