View Full Version : conversion confusion
garbagemonkey 06-24-2003, 05:05 PM I am trying sooo hard to become a Lightwave to MAYA convert, but it is like jumping into an icy cold swimming pool. One thing that seems to hold me back is that it seems like there is a lot of info and free tuts/documentation for the Lightwave user, but it is like pulling teeth to get good quality info for MAYA topics. Like, for instance UV mapping. Anyone know of a great tut for UV mapping in MAYA. Leigh's practically got a Lightwave mapping bible over there, and I'm at a loss for good stuff for MAYA on the web. Another thing- can anyone break it down for me on the best MAYA book they have purchased. I gotta' say I have MAYA 4.5 Savvy, and I'm the opposite of thrilled about how it is written. Does anyone else feel me on this? It seems like some people have it figured out when it comes to MAYA, but i'm still scratching my head and hoping those people will post and tell me not to lose faith in this powerful and popular app

It's not free, but it is pretty comprehensive, you can check out my 3D Apprenticeship training series for Maya - I have a 2CD set on UV Mapping an elephant. Anyway, what are you getting stuck on? Maybe I can help. There are a lot of free tutorials for Maya, just check out this thread if you haven't already:

As for Maya books, I have three that I like, my favorite is probably Maya Character Animation since I'm a character animator.
I think the trick is to play with it, and play with it and play with it some more. I learned Lightwave before Maya and it took a little getting use to, but it takes a bit of time. I also have Max. Each has a little bit of a different approach, but once you realize the 'paradigm' it clicks and you are off and running. One other thing to note about Maya. One of it's strengths lies in the fact you can control just about anything... but that can be a bit of a hurdle for a beginner... there is just sooo much to tweak and play with. Hang in there, start with simple things and don't try to tackle it all at once! Oh... and don't forget the manuals - they've really improved the HTML interface and search engine for the Maya Manuals... they also have a good "How Do I?" section.

Hey garbagemonkey ,
I've really got to disagree on this one:sad: There is a world of tutorials for Maya on the net.
http://www.boris3d.de/tutorials.html
Check this link out, it's got 722 tutorials or something like that. Mostly for Maya. You can find just about anything you need.
Obviously as with any package, it requires creativity and passion on your part.
Good Luck!
