View Full Version : Problem Displaying Imported OBJ Files From LW

When I import obj files from lw and assign textures to them and when I press six to display them I get a transparent looking object

I tried revrsing the normals but it did not help

What do you have to do to imported obj files so they behave in maya

Also, the object comes in as one piece, is there a way to seperate the polygonal mesh

Thanks

I'm not sure what version of Maya you are using, but in 5 it seems to work fine. The object loads with a material assigned to each section that has the same lightwave name (but different settings).

I know this may be silly to ask, but did you check your transparency setting on your shader? Also, to separate the parts out into separate pieces, select the object, then select Modeling->Edit Polygons->Separate. Hope it helps.

I am using 5

I export out of LW as test.obj and import that in to maya and it comes in as ' mesh ' in the outliner

I just tested it again and I can assign a basic shader but once I start changing its settings the ' mesh ' object ' turns transparent

Also, When I select the ' mesh ' object and then git seperate it says ' Error: Mesh has only one piece. Ignored. '

Is there some settings I have to put in place and is there a proper way to export and then open / import them in maya

Thanks

Hmmm, in regard to the shader issue. That's weird, I just tried it with a sphere and there were no problems. I can tweak the shader settings on the different parts of the model and it doesn't go transparent. There aren't too many options on the OBJ import, so I don't think that is the problem.

In regard to the separating out the object into pieces, it will only break it up if they are not connected in Lightwave. That is, you have to select your surface in LW, then cut and paste it to unweld it from the rest of the mesh. Then it will separate out. Maya won't automatically separate out the objects based on shader properties.

If you can, email me the LW object and I'll try it to see if I can duplicate the transparency issue.

The only way I can get a texture to show in the view is if I convert from polygon to subdivision and then from subdivision to nurbs

Ahh... the problem is that there is no UV map for the object. Create a UV map and you should be set to go. Sorry, it didn't click with me that you were applying a texture map.

I am so used to just draging and droping textures on to surfaces built in maya that I never realized I would have to do that for an imported object

Now I wish I could import as nurbs
