now this is bugging me:

every time i create a preview, a dialog pops up saying that there is no viewer configured for that filetype while there is. I then get a prehistoric version of media player. max tells me to set a filetype assosiation, i've set it to realone player, but it doesn't help... 3ds Max 5.1 with service pack, WinXP pro

Does max have it own setting for this or what? Please help

For some strange reason, I think Max is hard-coded to work only with the Windows Media Player. Every time I've tried to associate movie files with another player I get this complaint from Max. Frustrating, ain't it?

strange, very strange...
i never had troubles in making and paying back previews...
sometimes i tryed also to change the compression algorithm (from the codec box) and choose radius cinepack codec, indeo, divx, etc.

anyway. i believe is just a problem with files association under Windows.
in 3dsmax directory you find a subfolder called "previews" with a "_scene" file. it's the last preview you made. try to open it with different players WMP, QT, or what you installed and cross the fingers, may works.

make me know

File associations in Windows is what we're talking about. Of course you can play the movies directly from a folder, but Max won't use your preferred player to automatically show the preview movies. Associate movie files with anything other than Windows Media Player, and Max will complain about it when you view a preview!

i was thinking of writing some script that would take the preview and load it in the RAM player. well, i guess such script already exists. But it might take a lot of ram and slow to load in for bigger previews.

Anyways, i hope the next version of max will have some great advancements in the hardware preview, something more like hardware rendering, with all the shader stuff nowadays you can get production quality hardware rendering for a lot of projects...
