Yes it works fine with maya 5. I download GI joe from Highend 3D, seems though that Highend 3D is down right now. I am not able to get the page up.

The GI_Joe script, kinda fakes Global Illumination. It creates a sphere of lights.
You can choose the number of lights -16-64-256- and that already is easy and great. But it does a lot more actually;
HDRI (high dynamic range images)
Floor lights
Shadow map thingy ;)
Ermm, just get it, it improved my modeling skill by 0, and my lightingskills by 2000%
The render times go through the roof, using 256 lights, but what the ... its the next best thing after Coca Cola...

so it can be pretty slow also?

Adding more lights in a scene makes maya rendertimes longer. And because GI_Joe adds lights, the rendertimes go up.
But its not really slow in small scenes, my computer renders about 10 times slower with 256 lights, but the results are fantastic. If there is one script which gives you the most direct improvement in your scenes its GI_Joe...

Levitateme yes wazzup is right a scene with GIJoe makes anything 10 time slower when rendering but its a really great improvement
Here's a glimpse 64 lights and one orange to fake the sun

but, its still faster then like GI on nice settings? im just trying to get a compared rendering speed you know. thanks.

yeah it can be slow, but you can also check the box that says reuse depthmap shadows and for the objects that dont move, ie:buildings, then it does not re redner those shadow maps, and this greatly improves render times.
but guys now in maya 5 we have mental ray, all we have to do is learn that and now we can get even more sweet renders, and dont get me wrong i love GIJOE it looks awesome, but mental ray looks fantastic for a reason, peace guys

I also have mental ray, and I just can`t get the nice effects -not to mention better- that I can achive using GI_Joe. I guess I`m too lazy to investigate mental ray...
Anyone has a nice tut on the GI for mental ray?
