I'm animating an adult picking up a child and carrying them off, i cant get the parent constraint to work so i can turn it on/off..
does anyone know how?

Yeah, you have weight on all the constraints. 1 = its constrained, 0=constrain has no effect
So set it to 0. Or course it will pop but thats another problem .... :)

cheers Otto, but this doesnt seem to work for me..
the child walks into the scene and plays first, so it needs to be free from the constrain until the point where its lifted and carried.
You should be able to key the constraint at 0 and 1 or whatever you want, so you can have it at 0 to begin the scene and key it to 1 when the parent picks up the child. And to help with popping, there's a MEL script called snWorldSpaceTool (or something similar) that you may be able to use...
