View Full Version : NTSC, but why not 29.97fps?

Hello all,

I was wondering why Maya does not have a setting for 29.97 fps or does not have a custom fps setting. I realize that 29.97 is *almost* 30 so that should be good enough...but come on. Every other piece of 3d software that I use can do custom fps settings or already has the *correct* NTSC fps setting already.

Is there really no way to change this setting?

Thanks everyone!

just render out a jpg/png sequence and then use AE/FCP/premiere for assembly instead, with full compositing and fps control. nobody I know renders .movs or .avis directly from maya anyway. additionally, if it crashes, you've lost the whole file, instead of just the current frame.

yup.. that's what 99% of the people render to in 99% of the software out there. Sequences... they rock.

Oh, I am rendering in image sequences. I am concerned about the timing with live footage that I am having to do timing with. Won't it be off if I have footage that is at 29.97 or 59.94(we are using HD video now)fps and maya is at 30 or 60. I know it's a small difference, but still....

Thanks for the help again!

the answer is no it will not be off...

if you are looking at a frame (or field) of video in maya and are matching your animation to that, logically they are both the same frame rate no matter what setting you use 24 30 60 120 whatever that setting olny comes into play when you are viewing the result...

if you need to adjust the frame rate when you are viewing it that is a matter of tweaking playback speed in fcheck, flipbook, AE, whatever you are using to look at it...

ie: a frame is a frame and has no associated frame rate untill viewed, and at that point the rate is either correct or not (looks too fast or too slow) but frame 1 of your film/video plate = frame 1 of your maya render as does frame 10000 regardless of that setting...
