View Full Version : Modeling: Using a bitmap to model?
Krypton 06-24-2003, 04:36 AM Hello everyone,
I would like to model the Imperial Symbol shown below.
http://www.ultimatewebsource.com/Imp2b.bmp
I was wondering if there was a way to cut this shape into an object (plane or cylinder). I don't want to use a displacement map, but rather cut out the shape like a cookie cutter.
If this is not possible my other alternative will be to load it as a reference pic, outline it with splines, and extrude. I know this works, but was wondering if there was an easier/faster way.
Thank you.

hey bud
If you've got or can get Adobe illustrator you'll be able to create it as a vector and import it into max and then extrude it, and use it as a boolean.

Well, in order to do any operation on geometry(other than a displacement map) you have to use...geometry.
Using a boolean will be messy. You will need to take 2 minutes and trace over this shape with editable splines. Make sure you weld all the verts, and then you can use a shapemerge compound object to project the outline onto the surface of your mesh. After that, you can simply extrude those faces into the mesh.
Both of the above methods will yield a decent result, but it depends on the final application. In the end, if you want this complex shape to be geometrically perfect, you will need to actually model it into the object. This will take a bit more time.
Displacement mapping is actually a good idea in this case, or even just a bump, though it's pure speculation as to what it's final use will be.

its a piece of cake... actually its more like a piece of pie.
Just model a slice of the logo, and use array or symmetry to duplicate the pie sliece into a whole.
modeling it would probably be your best bet.

Thanks, looks like spline modeling is my best bet. Since the shape is very symmetrical it should be easy to use an array or symmetry. All I needed was that shape extruded basically, not attached to anything really.
Thanks for all your help :)
