View Full Version : what is the best shader for an SKIN material?
plaguelord 06-24-2003, 04:14 AM I´m making a skin material with some basic bitmaps, diffuse, bump, specular, using the translucent shader. But I´m not sure about in this case Translucent are the best choice. any idea?

I'd use a raytrace material type with falloff maps in the diffuse, luminosity, and/or extra lighting channels.
This will give you a better shade than using the translucency shader, imo.

wow, an answer of the master of max, great.:buttrock:
3dz, you use fallof in the difusse? , but, what happend if I have a nice bitmap for the texture of the face? I can use a raytrace material with the bitmap on the diffuse channel and get a decent shader?
thanks

You can still place your bitmap within the falloff channel in the diffuse slot. Doing this will allow you to get a soft edge with a sub-surface-scattering effect.

thanks, the new material looks good, but I have a little problem, when I use a HRDI for SKY / enviroment light with brazil, the head reflects all the image...

While I'm not familiar with brazil, you can turn off raytracing within the material. Open the "Raytracer Controls" rollout within the material, and turn off "enable raytracing".

Dude, if you're using Brazil, just use the Skin shader - it's more than capable.

You heard it from "The Man" himself. Try the skin shader!

Well, he wouldn't have access to the skin shader if he's not a commercial user. If your head reflects too much, turn down your reflection amount and make sure you're not using too high of an IOR on the material. Also if you're using Brazil, use the test material instead of the raytrace material, as it's better fit to work with Brazil materials when rendering with Brazil.

3DZ, here my settings, it's something very wrong?

I prefer to make a material with the default scanline render too. I'm too newbi on materials to explore brazil...

Well, doing it this way does take alot of setup, and it's not a perfect solution. It will, however look better than a default material.
I think you need to change the falloff colors to indicate skin. Instead of the white rim coloring you have, try using a pinkish color.
Here's a color pallet of human skin tones if it helps:

he says the head reflects the who enviroment, maybe the enviroment map is set to screen instead of spherical?

thanks 3dZ, as always you are the best :p
khepri, reflects the enviroment in any way, screen, spherical, etc. but only when I put it into enviroment map on the GI brazil rollout.
