View Full Version : Rigging Reel 2009
impisheye 01-06-2009, 09:39 AM As this is my first reel I'd really appreciate any and all critique (especially criticism)

I'm concerned that it's too long, but I'm not sure how to shorten the auto-rig demonstration without confusing the viewer. Thank you for your time/input!

Hey Gwen!
It's awesome to finally see some of your work. I don't think there's any problem with the length of your reel. From what I've heard, the most important part of your demo reel is the beginning. You may have only the first 20 seconds of your reel to grab a future employer's attention! This is why you want your best and newest work in the very beginning of your work. Start with a bang! It seems to me that you've done your reel backward, with your best work last. I would recommend reversing the order of each of the characters you showed. Also, really simplistic things can be cut. You don't need to show that the eyes or the neck of a character can move, unless there's something special about the way you've done them. Most people will assume that if you're showing more advanced aspects of your rigs, the simpler things are there as well.
Another really important part of your reel is making everything in it clear and concise. What part of this work is yours? What exactly did you do? Some of these things can of course be written down in a breakdown sheet, but it should still be clear what you're trying to demonstrate while you watch the reel. It seemed like you really got this at the end of your reel with your Thug character and script demonstrations. The slates before each concept and the subtitles underneath made it clear what was being presented. But all of this was completely missing in the first half of your reel! You need to explain everything that you're showing.
Well, that's my entirely non-professional two cents! Good luck!

hey Jordan!
Wow small world, I hope the city of angels is treating you well. I don't know if you noticed but the shelf at the end of the my reel was inspired by your presentation. I had lame mel scripts before, and your stuff looked so sweet I had to emulate it :)
Alright, I've changed the model order around and added more explanations. I'm going to keep the breakdown on a separate sheet. Thanks a million for you input.
