This is my current project, a man (similar to morpheous) with a trench coat (he will eventually be riding a dragon, and falling through the sky, so the trench coat is important to demostrate speed and direction of travel)

so im wondering how you would animate this mesh (currently a low detail simple version) and the torso is only there to show you what it will be sitting on
I was thinking having splines that link to certain areas of the mesh, but really rigging isnt one of my strong points. (dont know enought about it to jump in and start)

So any suggestions as to how to go about the rigging would be great. The splines are the lines where the movement would be happening (folds, edges of coat, and colars..ect) (i was thinking of using the method explined in the joan of arc tutorial for her hair but im not sure if that will give enough control.)

one idea:
make a cloth object out of your splines.
here is a maya video tut which can give you an idea how it works in maya. but you nearly have everything right there.
take your splines, make a garment, check stiffness and let it solve.
solve it in a cashfile to be able to scrub through your animation. attach a wind or vortexfield to the cloth and simulate again.

thank you so much

That is a real help, luckly i have got a copy of maya laying around...... yeah i thought maya was better with cloth and other effects, think i might finish the model in max and then bring it into maya for animation.

Your a total legend, that didnt only answer my questions about wind but also making sure it interacts with the character (if the leg hits it so it moves out of the way) thankz a tonne.
