Long story short, my Asus notebook was sent in for a minor warrenty repair (bluetooth didn't work) 4 months ago and the whole thing has been a complete cock-up, it's been lost twice, sent to the wrong address, they upgraded it as compensation and it turned out to be someone else's.......grrr.....anyway, I could write an essay on it all but that's not the point of this thread.

I'm expecting compensation via legal proceedings to the same value as the original notebook, about £550.

Are there any recommendations for an all-round graphics/music notebook for that price? I've got a Boxx for work but used the notebook for meetings, sketching, ZBrush, presentations and general evening/weekend tinkering. I'm considering a refurbed Dell from their outlet as there's some pretty good deals to be had but I'm not sure of what brands to look for or avoid.

how about this one:

it's $800.

or this one:

for $900. It seems unbelievable but there it is.
Acer may not have the best customer service
either so I guess buying a separate warranty is
in order.

The Dell Studio laptops come in at around that price new, with a lot of options if you want to go in any specific direction. Although they come with ATI graphics.

I swear by ASUS - they pack their systems with neat stuff, are cheap, and well made.

Well, I thought that, mine was far better made and spec'd than some machines at twice the price but the customer support has put me off for life. I've also noticed how slow it was in comparison to others having bought a cheap Toshiba to tide me over.

Yeah, I've not touched on that - I'm usually my own customer support.
