Just as a rule, I usually tell newbies that their first three rigs are going to suck, and to get through them and learn what they learn Not saying you do, but while in school, just get through as many rigs as you can so you start to learn all the stuff you didn't know you didn't know.
Anyway, short version is, I don't need anything rigged, but if you need the practice, go to this site, download some free models, and rig as many of them as best you can as fast as you can, and try to do it better/faster each time. Each time you get done with one figure out where it needs work and how you could be more efficient building it next time.

Note, you might needa find 3D studio, open them up there and export them out as OBjs to open them in Maya.
