Hi guys.

Windows XP boots up and the applications in the system tray load but when I click on an icon or the start button nothing happens. After I click a few times with my mouse the computer makes a beep noise and then the mouse stops moving on the screen. The PC is left in a frozen state and I have to turn it off at the wall which obviously isn't good.

Does anyone know what I can do. If I press F8 when windows boots should I try using Safe Mode or Last Known Good Configuration?

Any help greatly appreciated.

installed anything recently ?
check heat (you can check these in the Bios usually) check if there is any application that overruns, of the windows ones e.g. Taskbar or explorer.

your motherboard beeps which indicates hardware failure or heating problem.

iiiiiiiish look bad indeed! just boot in safe mode... if everything boot ok then I doubt its an hardware failure.

if its boot ok in safe mode, back-up your important stuff!!

Have you installed hardware lately?

I had the same reaction after I installed a new drive.

Nothing to do with the drive, but while working on the machine I moved a cable that got stuck on the cpu ventilation....so overheat it was..

I found it by booting in the bios and looking at the cpu temp...it was going up very fast.

have a look.

Hal.
