To be honest, I am starting this without any concept at all. I really like the opportunity to experiment and try different things without having any idea what I am going to end up with. The rough marker sketches below will provide a basis to start with. Stacked up on different layers in photoshop I will play around with the layer-options until something intersting comes up.

I like the atmosphere and the industrial feel of this one but still not happy with the composition. Will try a few more ideas and see if something emerges ;)

This seems promising,I love the gray overall look, maybe some close-ups open the composition and gives us some glimpses from the world you created, keep going :)

thanks for your comments, edenknight. It's really all that's there at this time. I will add a few close-ups later as soon as I start detailing the image.

it's definitely going to be an industrial city environment. Have to think about some foreground elements. Maybe add a few people or an airship and bring the whole thing to life.

...still busy moving shapes around. I think I will spend a little more time on this one now adding more detail.

I decided to put sketch 1 and 3 together in one image. It changes the scale of things quite a bit. Haven't thought about colors yet but will focus now on the lighting more.

I like it, I like it! :) If you still don't have a story for it, my suggestion is the tower of Babel... :)

Nice progression. What kind of brush are you using for your thumbs? I like the feeling of it.

@kamcsat. thanks for the hint. I think I will use your idea if you don't mind. Tower of Babel is perfect and a good source of inspiration too.

@BDMonster. Actually I did not use a brush at all. The early thumbnails were done with copic marker on regular paper, quite small in size. Then I scanned them for further development into photoshop. Different sketches on different layers. The I start moving them around, transform and change the opacity and layer-options(f.e. multiply, color doge, screen etc) doing this you can get a lot of surprising results(composition, textures) you would have never been able to draw. Scott Robertson introduced this technique on his DVD for Gnomon.

Tower of Babel(thanks to kamcsat)

wikipedia offers a great source of inspiration: "Some Kabbalistic mystics provide intriguing and unusual descriptions of the Tower of Babel. According to Menachem Tsioni, an Italian Torah commentator of 15th century, the Tower was a functional flying craft, empowered by some powerful magic or technology [4]; the device was originally intended for holy purposes, but was later misused in order to gain control over the whole world... Many Kabbalists believed that the ancient peoples possessed magic knowledge of the Nephilim, which allowed them to construct such powerful devices. Moreover, according to some commentaries, some Talmudic sages possessed a manual for building such a flying tower....These accounts coincide with some of Zecharia Sitchin's speculations and the ufological theories concerning the ancient Indian vimanas. According to another mysterious Kabbalistic account, one third of the Tower builders were punished by turning into various semi-demonic creatures and banished into three parallel dimensions, inhabited now by their descendants [7]."

The lighting is so dramatic! Very movie-like! I am impressed how you rendered the buildings. I'm not very good at buildings and perspective. The characters remind me of a huge Ironman, standing next to Batman (in steam age Gotham City). Bravo!

Great image, it has a good feel and environment. I wish there was a little more to see of the tower. But the characters are very nice.

now that you mention that about the final image. I didn't read the directions (2nd topic on the sticky). I never submitted my final image through the CG uploader. I thought it was submitted through this forum only. That's what I get for skimming the emails. I'll do it correctly next time. I hope your image made it through! Best of luck!
